Before I knew what was happening, we were safely on the shore amongst the shiny beach sand and tall coconut trees. “Now, you wait here, me damsel. This trip could be dangerous, and an expedition like this is no place for a woman.” He then stood up to help the men unload the ship. ”Georgie here will stay here and watch over you. Don’t worry, dear, we shan’t be gone long.”

After what seemed like hours, they were finally ready to leave. With a quick farewell, they set off into the forest.

I had made up my mind. I was not going to let them leave me there in the middle of nowhere with some stranger named Georgie. Better to be with a lot of strangers than just one total weirdo. So, when Georgie fell asleep in the sun, I set off to follow them, with not even a bottle of water to sustain myself.

I walk for hours, getting attacked by mosquitoes and spooking at the occasional low-flying birds. After I had the pirates in sight, I keep in close pursuit of them at about ten feet behind.

Eventually we reach the mouth of an enormous cave. The pirate who had cared for me on the ship turned around and said, “Follow us no further. If you keep going, you will see a side of us you wouldn’t otherwise see.”
