Cristina

I woke up to the text tone on my phone. It was Nate texting to ask if I wanted to come over. I was about to respond that I was grounded, until I remembered that there was a big tree right outside my bedroom window. I could leave and no one would know. I carefully opened the window. There was plenty of room for me to climb down. I got dressed in a black tank top and jeans, and climbed down the tree. I texted Nate back that I could hang out, and we planned to meet at a coffee shop.

I was the first to get there, so I ordered a coffee while I waited for Nate.

I saw him walking over to my table.

"Hey Cristina." He greeted me.

"Hey Nate."

"What do ya want to do today?"

"I don't know. Anything but go to my house."

"Why?"

"Because I'm supposed to be grounded. I sneaked out of the house."

"Well, we can hang out at Amanda's place. Her parents are usually fine with it."

"Is that the girl that was shouting at you yesterday?"

"Yea, she overreacts sometimes."

We finished our coffee and went over to Amanda's place with Nate. When we got there we were greeted by Amanda, but instead of shouting she greeted us happily.

"Hey Nate! Hey Cristina!"

"Hey Amanda." Nate greeted her in response.

"My mom said we can play video games. Whatcha wanna play?"

"Do you have the new Zelda?"

"You betcha!"

She led us inside and up a flight of stairs into the attic. The attic was filled with anime and Nintendo posters and merch.

"I've also got Mario cart 8, if you wanna play that." She said as she led us over to a tv with a couple of beanbag chairs sitting in front of it.

"Thanks Amanda." Nate said.

"Yea, I still think the switch is the only reason your my friend." She responded

"That and your moms cooking."

"True."

Amanda had gotten the switch set up and had made Nate an account.

"There ya go, I'll go get us a snack." She said handing Nate the controller.

"Are you really only her friend for video games?" I asked after she left.

"Na, that's just a joke. You wanna play?" He asked me, gesturing to the screen.

"Sure!"

"Okay, she has Mario kart, and that we can play together. Also Andy might be coming over later."

"That sounds great." I said as I sat down next to Nate. He got the controllers set up as Amanda came back.

"I have snickety snooks!" She said as she set down a tray of snacks.

"Thanks Amanda!" I said as I took an apple wedge.

"Whatever. Can I play?" She asked.

"You do realize it's your game system, and you have control over what we do on it." Nate told her.

"Can we just play?" I said.

We started a race, only to be interrupted midway through by a knock on the door and someone saying "Amanda, can I have the switch?" Amanda sighed and stood up.

"My little brother." She explained. She went over to the door and had a talk with her brother. When she came back, her brother was following her. "He has to play with us, or else my mom will get mad."

"That's fine." I said. We started another race, and Nate ended up winning. Amanda got second, I got fifth, and Amanda's little brother Max got last.

"Hey, no fair! You guys are cheating." He complained.

"Max, just because you got last does not automatically mean we're cheating."

We played a few more races, Max losing every time.

"I don't wanna play anymore." He wined.

"Whatever, Max." Amanda told him as he left.

We played a few more races, then Amanda got me an account set up so I could play Zelda. As I got started a knock sounded on Amanda's door.

"Amanda, one of your friends is here." Her mom said through the door.

"Coming mom!" She left and came back with Andy and a giant bag of potato chips.

"Hey guys!" He said as he flopped down on the beanbag chair next to Nate.

"Hi!" I greeted him. I was done with the intro and had started playing.

"Can I play?" He asked me.

"I literally just started." I told him.

"Aww, but I want to play." He wined.

"Let her play for a little bit dude, then we can play Mario cart." Nate said as he took a handful of chips. I played for a bit longer, then we started playing Mario cart. The next time I checked my phone it was eight o'clock.

"Oh, I gotta go guys. See ya later!" I told them.

"You need a lift?" Nate asked me.

"Sure!" I told him.

He drove me to the corner where he usually dropped me off.

"I guess now I'll see what my mom has to say." I told him as I got out of the car.

"Hey, don't die." He told me as I walked away.

"No promises." I shouted back.

I walked up to the door and opened it.
