Chapter 11
"How far away is this place we're going to?" I asked, sitting at a desk while tweaking some parts of my Instant Changer. Takeyama sat across from me in his own desk, messing with one too. Apparently he knew just as much about technology as me, and knew exactly how to reprogram the Instant Changer's random form selection and make it... not so random. The only problem in all this was the fact that the girls were making us be girls too. But we had to be like Kurai's, which meant we'd have to be young looking for the excuse that we hadn't specialized to sound true.
"Far. Ever heard of the civilization away from anything Kurai that the Dorei were rumored to have built and stayed in?" Takeyama didn't look away from his work, but his voice had a bitter note. "It's real, of course, but the original was taken down. We're going to a remake of it but the coordinates are unknown."
"Wait, if the coordinates are unknown, how the hell are we supposed to get there?" I looked up, unable to focus as much on my work with the news update on our travels. "Have you even ever been there before?"
"Yes, I have. And I suggest that on our way there, you forget everything you see. We purposely do this so no one will ever find us. You see, the people that live their permanently make maps for us, leave them at random places for only us top find. Even if we do find it though, the map has to be decoded. And no Kurai knows the Dorei language, so it's safe like that."
"So what you're saying is that there's a sort of random path set up for us to follow that only the girl's will know?" Because they are the only Dorei's here and I sure as heck don't know their language. I didn't even know that they had a language.
"Pretty much. And like you said, it's random. The path changes every day, which is why we have to move fast. And also why we're leaving at one am tomorrow. It's the only way to be sure that we'll have the time to make it with a minimum of breaks for food and rest." He took a swig of some water on his desk and returned to his Instant Changer, sighing.
I looked at my own hands, the skin and the veins. Were they all just decoration? The Mecka-Kikai had veins too and their skin, even if it was hardened to the point of competing against diamond and flexible enough to be rubber. And their veins still worked, though mostly to carry electrical currents through them. They didn't operate on blood anymore, and neither did their organs. Was that the same with me?
And then those battle mode things. My hand had literally become a piece of black metal, longer and sharper than the skin I was seeing. That, and I'd been able to 'manipulate' the ceiling and break through it with a simple punch in the air. Was that some sort of manipulation of gravity? I flexed my arm, watching the muscles work and a single bone protrude slightly near the wrist. This was all normal for normal Kurai and Dorei; it was normal for any living being with our body structures. But was I really living?
"You look like you want to dissect your arm. What's going through that head of yours?" Takeyama leaned forward, no doubt having finished whatever modifications he'd made to the Instant Changer. I glanced down at mine, which wasn't even halfway finished. And I still needed to go to sleep early because of the whole getting up at one am thing. "Come on, say it. Don't worry 'bout the time. We don't really need sleep, but it does help keep us sane."
