It was confusing. All of it. Their relationship that is. Sherlock never really understood normal human relationships but theirs was complicated beyond measure from the start.

John was, and probably always would be hurting from losing his wife but Sherlock was always there, on all the more difficult nights, when the doctor couldn't sleep or alternatively when Rosie couldn't sleep and stayed up crying probably longing to be held by the mother she'd grown attached to. Even when he was on a case, Sherlock was there for them and eventually John and Sherlock's relationship started to mold into something different.

They never talked much about it but on some level they both knew they'd become something more.

It started with the smallest of things, comforting hugs, subtle banter, the constant need to be in each other's close proximity. The long stares and a strong feeling of tension in the air. But only grew from there.

One morning Sherlock was sitting quietly, appearing to be in his mind palace. John had the day off so he'd decided he would take Rosie to the park for a bit

"Sherlock I'm leaving I'll be back later." He said and without thinking much of it he brushed the detective's curls from his face and kissed his forehead in a simple goodbye gesture. He assumed it wouldn't matter because Sherlock would be deep in his mind palace by now but the detective smiled when he did.

Sometimes if they were in a case and had to run about the streets of London for whatever reason, Sherlock would take John's hand and use the excuse that he didn't want him to get lost, or he was being to slow.

Soft kisses on the forehead turned into soft kisses on the cheek and eventually turned into not-so-soft kisses on the mouth and everywhere else that wasn't covered by the annoying constraints of clothing.

"Sherlock you know what we're doing right?" John asked once.

"We're eating takeout John." Sherlock said pointing at the food with his own chopsticks.

"No I mean... It's just that.... I think maybe we should talk about this thing  that we're doing."

"What thing?"

"You know what I'm talking about!"

"I do in fact. I'm trying to get you to admit it out loud John. What are we doing?"

Sherlock expected John to say something along the lines of becoming a couple or starting a relationship, but it threw the detective for a loop when John answered,

"Falling in Love."

A few weeks into their little love roulette, something else began to develop between the two but surprisingly Sherlock couldn't figure out what.

"I imagine John Watson thinks love is a mystery to me but the chemistry is incredibly simple."

Was it now? If it was so simple then why was Sherlock feeling so lost on the subject all of the sudden.

It all became a little more clear one night after Sherlock had helped solve an astonishing case for the Scotland Yard.

"That was amazing!" John blurred out when they'd gotten back to the flat. Sherlock's mind was racing and the satisfaction of having solved his latest case was pumping through his veins. He smirked at John as they hung up their coats

"I know. Triple homicide, missing bodies, missing suspects-"

"No you were amazing! Sherlock that was the most- you are amazing... How are you so amazing?" Sherlock's skin felt hot
