Sherlock never cared much for the holidays, they came and went in a haze for the detective. This was until John came into his life. Everyone always says how much they want to be with their loved ones around the holidays and Sherlock had fallen in love with John.He tried to remember that on the morning of New Years Eve while as the doctor wandered the flat sulking about how his girlfriend had ended their short relationship just in time for the new year. The detective didn't understand why he had to hear about it.
"John you should have seen this coming."
"Oh I should have seen it coming? We were getting on perfectly fine Sherlock!"
"Wrong. You were she wasn't."
"Oh well that's just great. You can predict the outcomes now?"
"Always."
"What?"
"Not just now always."
"Well then why don't you ever say something!?"
"Because then you'd be cross with me like you are now! So why don't you go complain about it to her? I'm sure she cares more to hear you out and she broke up with you!"
John didn't let his face show that the remark had stung for very long but it was still there. "Course. How silly of me to confide in you, you're just my friend." He said and stormed upstairs to his room.
Sherlock sighed exasperated. There was going to be party at Molly's place and he and John were supposed to go, which meant there would be tension and Sherlock was tired of tension. All kinds of tension especially the sexual tension.
_
"Molly this party is lovely." Sherlock said taking a drink from his friend. "Was that good?" He asked following the unnaturally kind statement. "Ordinary people say that sort of thing sometimes."
"Yes well... it's usually better if you actually mean it." She said frowning at her drink. Sherlock ignored her,
"Look at me I'm practicing people skills. I need John to talk to me again" he glanced out over the hoard of people in Molly's living room looking for his flat mate. He found him sitting on the sofa not even trying to socialize.
"You could try apologizing... but you know I'm just ordinary." She said with a scowl and took Sherlock's drink back leaving him to his moping.
Sherlock sighed and made his way across the room to sit down next to his friend. He glanced at his watch it was about eleven. "This party it dull." John said choosing to break the tension first.
"If you think it's dull can you imagine how I feel?" John smiled at that. "I'm sorry for the thing that I said earlier."
"It's alright I'm sorry for complaining so much."
"You do complain a lot."
"Piss off!" Sherlock chuckled "Oh look at us John. What are we doing here I wish someone would get murdered."
"Course you do... I wish I didn't have to be so lonely tonight."
Sherlock scoffed. "Well you've got me."
John smiled a little at that "I suppose you're right. Who are you planning to kiss at midnight? I saw you talking to Molly..." Sherlock gave him a weird look,
"What do you mean?"
John shook his head, "Never mind."
Sherlock sighed. "Probably Mrs. Hudson." John laughed. "Good choice. But I think you better let her know that she's gotten rather friendly with that fellow over there."
"Oh god."
"Do you think he owns a drug cartel?" John joked and they both started laughing.
_
At 11:58 people were standing around in anticipation for midnight to come about. John spent the last hour flirting with random girls in an attempt to find someone to kiss at midnight but the doctor had no such luck. It seemed that everyone at the party had someone already.
"Ten! Nine! Eight!..." People began to chant and Sherlock found his way to John who'd been across the room looking crestfallen.
"Seven! Six! Five!..."
"Well this is it." began to gripe. "This is how I start the new year..."
"John you're being dramatic it's a silly tradition it doesn't matter."
"Four!..."
"It's not silly!"
"Three!..."
"Yes it is it's just a kiss John! It's just for fun."
"Two!..."
"Yeah well it matters to me..." He pouted.
"One!..."
"Oh for god sakes..." Sherlock sighed exasperated and grabbed the doctor's collar and pulled him into a kiss. John's eyes shot open in shock but leaned into the kiss anyways, placing his hand at the side of Sherlock's face. Sherlock wrapped his arms around John and pulled him close.
"Happy New Year!" A synchronized cry went up from the crowd around them but neither of the pair noticed, they were lost in the feeling of each other, and caring about nothing but the feeling of butterflies in their stomachs.
Their kiss went on a lot longer than anyone else in that room but they were oblivious to the world around them. When they finally broke apart John saw that Mrs. Hudson and Molly were watching them from the kitchen.
He cleared his throat. "Um... Sherlock can we go home?"
"Oh thank god I thought you'd never ask."
