Chapter One

Bright lights and the sound of beeping rouse me from my dreamless sleep making me wonder if I was late for school again. Letting out a sigh, I try to open my eyes but nothing happens. Frowning I put all my strength into opening my eyes, curling my fists into tight balls as the strain becomes unbearable but I press on. With no luck, I release my hands and try to think about why I'm like this in the first place. Thinking back doesn't help either, and I grunt in frustration. Suddenly voices enter my head making me even more confused.

"You don't look so good dear, if you feel any worse come straight ok?" "Yeah mom, I will."

"Hey you ok, Taylor? Your really pale...."  "She doesn't look so-"  "Mrs. Edwards I don't think-"  "Mrs. Edwards!" "Call an ambu-"

As the voices start to fade, my whole body goes numb and I'm enveloped in darkness.

"Doctor, how is she?!" my mother's frantic voice breaks me out of my wonderful dream. "Well since it was her first time her body is in shock right now, but she should be waking up soon. In a few minutes perhaps, were keeping a close eye on her so don't worry." a gruff male voice replies and my eyebrows scrunch in confusion. 'Who the heck is this guy and what the hell are they talking about?!' I think to myself. Opening my mouth I try to tell my mom that I'm fine but all that comes out is a moan. 'What in the jungle!?' Opening my mouth I try again but the same thing happens. "Sweetie! Do you hear me? Squeeze my hand sweetie!" my mom says before I feel her hand in mine. Giving up on trying to talk I squeeze her hand but it only moves a few inches. Grunting I try again, this time giving her hand a light squeeze before releasing it all together. Loud pants escape my mouth as I try to regain my breath. 'Just doing that was like running a 1000 mile marathon! What the hell is wrong with me!?' i think to myself, loud pants escaping from my mouth as I try to regain my breath. "Doctor, she's responding! What do I do?" my mom says and I frown at her words, what did she mean by responding

"Just keep talking to her Mrs. Hale, that's all any of us can do right now." the same gruff voice from before replies. "Oh sweetie, you had us so worried! Come on, open your eyes for me honey!" 'Open my eyes huh, that's probably going to be like running a 2000 mile marathon mom' I think with a sigh. "You can do it Jess! Come on sweetheart!" she says filling me with hope. After a few grunts and puffs I finally open my eyes but quickly close them seconds later, the bright light above my head is way too bright. "Turn off the dam light mom." I moan. Freezing at the words coming out of my mouth, I quickly open my eyes and look around the room for my mom in shock. "Yes finally, actual words! Not mumbles and moans!" I shot in joy, fist pumping the air. Loud laughter enters my ears and I look at my mom weirdly, what the heck is wrong with her? Raising my eyebrow at her, she wipes tears from her eyes and just shakes her head with a smile on her face. "Its good to have you back Jess, I've missed you so mu-m-mm-mmmm-" she starts to say before bursting into tears. "Mom! If you cry your gonna make me cry." I tell her, tears welling up in my eyes in seconds. Warm hands wrap around me, engulfing me in a hug. The familiar smell of my mom's perfume engulfs my senses and I press my head into her chest, craving her warmth.

"Alright Miss. Hale, I have something very important to tell you." the doctor says as he sits at the edge of my bed, his hand softly patting me on my foot before going back to playing with his pen.  As he starts talking, I identify him as the owner of the gruff voice from the second time I gained consciousness. "Now, the reason why your in the hospital is because you have Epilepsy. I believe the cause is because your cramming for your tests, there coming up yes?" "Yeah, in two weeks." I tell him shocked. "Wait, I've crammed before, why hasn't it had before?" I say as I sit up slowly while my mom fluffs my pillow. "Thanks mom." I say to her as she walks back to her chair. She smiles softly in response and the doctor clears his throat causing my eyes to slowly head to his. "I believe it may be the normal pressure of cramming and waiting for college responses." he says while writing something down on his clip board. "Ohhhhh.......that does make sense, so what do I do now?" I ask him with a raised eyebrow. "First, were going to do some tests. These will help us to find out what type of  medication you'll need  and side effects. It's best we start testing right away so you don't miss anymore school then you already have." he says twirling his pen before placing it behind his ear.

"That sounds good.....wait a second, what do you mean by missing school?!" I shout at him confused. I can't miss any studying time if I want to pass. With a sigh the doctor says, "You've missed four days of school, six days in all. Its Sunday today but you wont be able to go school tomorrow, so you'll be missing one ore two more days." I stare at him like he's lost his mind, I couldn't have been asleep for that long! Looking to my mom for conformation I hope that the doctor is lying and that I still had to weeks to study, not one. Slowly her small smile turns into a frown and she nods her head at me. Stunned, I look at the ceiling in disbelief. "I need to start studying right away! Mom can you get the folder for me? Please?" I ask pleadingly with puppy dog eyes and a frown. "No, you can't study." the doctor says with a straight face. My eyes quickly find his and I stare at him like he's lost his freaking mind, what does he mean I can't study?! I need to study! "If you study, you'll be in danger of having another episode and you may not wake up in time for your tests. Would you want that to happen or would you rather stay healthy and be able to take them?" Keeping my face calm, I stare at him but on my insides I'm shouting some very nasty words at him. Slouching into my pillow, I fold my hands and give him a small nod. "Good girl." he says with a small smirk. 'That little!' I think to myself with a glare in his direction.
