"Evie Johnson's family may I see you?' I heard the doctor say as i began to stand up.
Evie was my older sister by 2 years. We were close friends and we were each others only remaining family. Our parents had been murdered last summer in a bank robbery and now she was in the hospital. She had been hit by a drunk driver and had severe brain damage and internal bleeding.
"yes doctor" i said quietly. "listen, Ainsley i know this is hard for you, but we tried everything we could in surgery, there is just no way to fix her, the machine is living for her. She doesn't know anything and can't live on her own, she will never wake up, we need your permition to take her off of life support." I heard the doctor start to say.
No no no this can't be true i thought. Just a couple of days ago we were laughing and having fun, just us sisters, and now she isnt coming back to me, i wont get to laugh and smile with her anymore.
"You can unplug her, i dont want her to suffer." I whisper trying to contain the tears, i know if i speak to loud they will come and be unstoppable. "are you sure? do you want a moment alone with her?" the doctor asked carefully. "its fine." I mumble, if I see her i will break down. "ok we just need you to sign these papers, I'm sorry for your loss, she was a great person." the doctor said trying to comfort me.
I quickly signed the papers and drove home. Home, I don't know how I am going to keep my house, I don't have a job and i haven't even finished high school. Those things were Evie's job. She being 18, she was out of high school and could work full time, me being 16 not many people hired that young of people and I had promised Evie that I would at least finish college.
I unlocked the door and walked inside. I slowly sighed looking at all of Evie's things, smiling every now and then at the many memories i have with her. I decided that I was going to pack up all of her stuff as quickly as possible. I needed to be strong about this and seeing all of her stuff everday wasn't going to help me.
I grabbed some boxes from the basement and started to pack up her things. I chuckled at all the posters of her favorite band, One Direction, on her walls. She always talked about them and how much she loved them. I liked them, they were attractive, funny, and good singers, but I never really had time to be a big fan. where as Evie had shirts, posters, phone cases, braclets, shoes, everthing! she loved them. I went over to her radio and turned it on. I let music play out as I packed up her things.
I finished packing up her clothes and started to strip the walls. I carefully folded up her posters of One Direction, you never know they could be worth something someday and I dont really want to through away any of her things.
After about an hour I finish her room. I stack the boxes carefully in a corner of her room, making them take up as little room as possible. I guess this would be a guest room now. Just as i sit down on the couch my phone rings. I dont recognize the number but i answer.
"Hello is this Ainsley Johnson?" i hear a familiar voice ask.
"yes.. you sound familiar are you.. Liz?? Oh my god Liz is that you?" i say getting excited.
"yes! im surprised you remember me! we havent talked for 4 years!" She replied
"how could i forget you? we were best friends from the age 3-12!" i say
"oh yeah i forgot!" she says joking as usual. We had been friends for what seemed like forever but our friendship was abrubtly cut off when her dad transfered jobs and they moved to Liverpool.
"so I'm going to be in London next week and i was wondering if you would want to get together?" Liz asks.
"that sounds great! but can i call you later and get the details?" i say with a tired tone.
"sure talk to you later ainsley!" liz says.
"nice to talk to you Liz! bye!" i say.
"Oh wait! can we hang out with a few friends of mine? i havent seen them in a while and I would like to spend as much time with you and them as possible." she says
"Sounds great. now bye Liz!" i chuckle and hang up.
