Chapter 10
Saturday
"What did the shark's teeth look like, Lani?" Pano asked.
"I told you a million times already..." I said, keeping my eyes glued to the TV screen.
Fred glared at us. "SHHHHHH! The movie's just getting to the good part."
I was absorbed in the movie, trying to forget all about the scare I'd had yesterday. I'd been lucky-after receiving the 911 call I'd made on Mr. Nagahara's cell phone, the coast guard had dispatched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and a cutter boat to our location. The helicopter had rescued me, while the cutter had taken the rest of the class ashore. Mr. Nagahara and the clunky Sea Explorer had been towed to a dock later, where Mr. Nagahara had been charged with boating under the influence.
At the hospital, I'd been given a slew of tests, including blood tests. A few hours later, I was declared fine and released back to my family. Tutu, Auntie and Pano were still in full freak out mode over what had happened, but the Frightening Four had accepted the news and moved on.
Fred pointed to the screen. "Look, the group is splitting up, even though they think a psycho killer is in the house!"
My stomach muscles tightened and I pulled my knees up to my chin. The woman in the movie was obviously a fool-why would you stay in a house you suspect is haunted? The woman headed up the staircase calling out 'hello?', as if the psycho killer was going to be like 'oh hi, I'm upstairs waiting to kill you'. The doomed woman was a silent for a moment, then the chandelier above the staircase crashed down in front of her. Franny and Faye let out a scream as a ghost monster appeared at the top of the stairs, covered in blood, holding what looked like a rusty scythe.
I covered my eyes. "Oh no, he's gonna-"
Tutu stormed in wearing her nightgown and blocked the screen her hips. "What are you kids watching in here? It's eleven thirty at night! Lani, you should be in bed recovering and..."
A blood curdling scream erupted from the TV set.
"Wha da?" Tutu yelled. She jumped around and saw a flash of the monster slicing at the woman. Nauseating gore splashed up inches from her bum. Tutu punched out instinctively and bam!- I heard the sound of wires crunching and electricity sparking as the TV fell over and the screen went dark.
"You broke it!" Frank yelled. It was the first time I'd ever seen him cry.
Ten minutes later, after righting the damaged TV and suffering through a mini lecture about how horror movies are not appropriate for children, we were sent to bed. I hadn't realized how exhausted I was until my cheek hit my pillow. I fell asleep immediately, but Franny and Faye's whispering in Naga-Maga woke me up again. I stared at the ceiling, listening.
"Fonto...ya jeeling, dercas..."
"Mus templar papiya."
"Burmani."
I'd never let the girls know before, but I've picked up enough of their ridiculous language to understand everything they say:
-Faye...I'm nervous, seriously...
-We must tell dad.
-I agree.
"What do you need to tell your dad?" I asked.
The twins shot up in their beds. "How'd you know what we were saying?" Franny demanded. I was so surprised she'd spoken English, I didn't respond.
"She's cracked the code, Ellabel," Faye said.
