Leah’s POV

It was a hazy, humid summer afternoon, surprisingly warm for London in the summer actually. It’s normally rainy and a bit cooler than it is now. I was walking through the park with my dog Snickers and my best friend Audrey.

“So you know how Hunter and I have been dating for almost a month now,” she continues talking to me about her boyfriend. Way to make me feel like a loser.

                “Yeah.” I sigh.

“Well I don’t know what to get him as our one month anniversary present!” she whines. I have to hold myself back from slapping her across the face, or face palming myself.

“Please tell me you’re joking.” I complain.

“Oh stop it. You don’t know what I’m going through! What if he gets mad that I don’t get him anything…” and that’s when I tune out. I stare off into the woods lining the gravel pathway we’re walking on. As Audrey continued to blab on about how I couldn’t possibly understand her situation, Snickers suddenly caught sight of something rummaging about in the brush. I yanked his leash a bit and urged him to keep walking. Suddenly my arm was being basically yanked out of its socket, Snickers’ leash trailing behind him as he sprinted after a squirrel.

“SNICKERS!” I screamed, chasing after him. I ran through people, pushing them over and lamely apologizing as I continued after my dog. God he was so fast. I was almost out of breath when I came around the bend and saw Snickers sitting with a woman. She was on a bench, sunglasses on, a straw sunhat with a bright pink bow on it. Her hand was calmingly petting Snickers’ head in rhythmic movements. I approached timidly and tapped the woman on the shoulder.

                “Um excuse me?”

“Oh Leah is that you honey?” Now I was even more confused and slightly freaked out. She knew my name? I didn’t even know who she was how on earth did she know who I was?

“Erm… yes and you are?” I ventured. The woman turned to face me, putting her sunglasses on top of her hat, her deep chocolate brown eyes twinkling in the sunlight. Wait a minute… I recognized those eyes.

“Oh you must not remember me. It definitely has been a while since I’ve seen your mum and you and Liam probably haven’t seen each other in years.” That’s who she was. Liam has the exact same eyes.

“Gosh Karen I’m so sorry I didn’t recognize you! But Snickers certainly did didn’t you Snickers?” I said, my voice getting higher pitched as I talked to my dog.

“Leah! Are you okay!? Geez don’t run off on me like that!” Audrey panted coming up behind me.

“Karen this is my friend Audrey, Audrey this is Karen. She’s an old friend of my mums.”

“It’s nice to meet you Karen.” Audrey said, sticking out her hand for a shake.

                “Likewise dear.”

“Where’s Liam? Are he and Geoff with you?” I ask.

“Oh no, I’m here alone today. Geoff is at work and Liam is on the X Factor.”

“He’s WHAT?! Again!?” I sputter. Liam was on the X Factor? No way! I knew he’d always been a good singer, but after what had happened to him two years ago, I didn’t think he’d muck up the courage to go back.

“Yes he went back and he’s made it through to the next round. You and your family should come by and watch with us on Tuesday night! We can all get together since I haven’t seen your parents in the longest time and I know Geoff will love to see you dad, he needs another man in the house now that Liam’s left!”

“Yeah that sounds awesome. I’ll be sure to let her know and have her give you a call.” I say with a small smile.

“Sounds wonderful dear. Well I should be going. It was nice to see you again.” She says, pulling me into a hug. “It was nice to meet you as well Audrey.” She gives Audrey a hug as well before walking off in the direction we’d come from and waving behind her.

“Why didn’t you tell her about your dad?” Audrey asks, sitting next to me on the bench.

“I-I just didn’t know how to tell her. And did you see how happy she looked to see me? There was no way I was going to rain on her parade like that.”

“Well you think she’s not going to notice when your dad doesn’t come with you and your mum on Tuesday? You can’t hide that your dad is dead forever. She’ll figure it out sooner or later.” I just look at my feet, swinging under the bench. I look up to the sky, blinking back tears I can feel forming at the backs of my eyes.

“Yeah.” I sniff. “Can we just go home?” Audrey gives me a hug before rising off the bench. She reaches her hand out to help me up.

“Hey don’t worry about it. They won’t be angry, if anything they’ll accept it and want to help or something.” She says, trying to reassure me. I just nod, and keep walking.
