Hidden Secrets

We live in a world full of secrets. Some aren't so big. Others are embarrassing, and the rest? Well, let's just say that they're too big to handle.
But the secret I hold? I'll let you in on it, but as long as you promise not to freak or tell.

Deal?

Hi, I'm Juniper. I'm 17 years old and I live in the small town of Mistmere. I live with my Mother, father, and my 3 year old brother Jordan.

To the naked eye we may seem like a normal family but we aren't. That's the secret. You see, we came from another dimension when I was 15. We decided to live amoung the regulars. The regulars - as we call them - are humans. As you probably have already guessed, we aren't regulars. We are what some people may call creatures, monsters, or even freaks. My dad? He's a centaur. You know, one of those half horse, half man things. Yeah, he's one of those. While my mum well she's a nymph. She is basically apart of nature. She can turn into a tree as her hidden defense or she can make plants grow. So basically she's just in tune with nature.

Something about being a descendant of The mother nature? I'm not quite sure. I didn't pay much attention to nymph history.

My little brother? Well we don't know yet. You see, finding out what you are is like puberty for the regulars. You know how during puberty, regulars get acne, grow more hair in weird places, and their body changes and it's all disgusting? Yeah that's kinda what we have. Except our version of puberty we don't have that problems that come with it. Our skin is always clear and we never get all that weird and gross stuff that happens to regulars. Instead it's an exciting time. You find out what creature you are.

It's not genetic. Which means you could be a completely different species from your parents. Sometimes finding out what you are comes with a price. Families have been torn apart because the parents hate the type of species you've turned out to be.

I just hope that never happens to my family.

Oh right, you're probably wondering what species I am. Well, to be honest, I don't know.

You're confused, aren't you? The normal age where you discover who you are? It's between 10  to 13, similar to the regulars. However sometimes there are those late bloomers. The ones that don't find out who or what they are. That's me. I have heard of cases where they never find out who or what they are but my parents believe I will eventually find out who I am.

I just hope it's soon.

Ok now that you've got a bit of knowledge on me and my family. As well as our secret, let's begin.

"Juniper! Sweety, you're going to be late for school!" The voice of my Mother carries up the stairs into my room. Her voice urging for me to move my lazy ass up and out of bed.

I groan in response and flip over facing away from my door. Why do Mondays even exist? They're the mother of all that is evil. I don't just hate them, I despise them. Then again, if they didn't exist we'd probably hate Tuesdays just as much. Ugh, can it just be the weekend all week or can we just have no school?

My brooding thoughts are interrupted as I'm attacked my little brother. He lands on top of me with a oopf. He's not heavy, but seriously those knees and elbows hurt like hell when they dig into you. He giggles. Glad he's having a good morning. Sarcasm fam. Call me a pessimist but there are no good mornings.

"Juni, wake up," he exclaims as he prys open one of my eyes and looks into it. I think, trying to check if I'm still alive. I groan and swatt his hands away. Mumbling something about letting me sleep. His little laugh sounds around me and he begins to jump up and down. After about 5 seconds of it I give up on trying to go back to sleep.

I open my eyes and sit up grabbing him. He squeals in delight as I get out of bed and hang him upside down.

"You woke me up, now I have to go to school," I complain to him while I begin tickling him with my other hand. He's a giggling mess. He struggles about - laughing his head off - trying to get free from my grip. I eventually stop tickling him and place him gently onto my bed. "I'll be downstairs soon, go and have breakfast," I tell him as I search through my drawers for some decent outfit to wear.

He doesn't hesitate to run out of my room at full speed. Nearly throwing himself down the stairs and into the kitchen.

Yup that's normal for an avid food lover.

I quickly grab a pair of black denim high waisted shorts and a light blue cropped singlet. I then rush into the shower and wash my hair. I finish in the record time of 3 minutes.

This is the problem with being late. Never enough time to sit in the shower and come up with the most randomest ideas. Like one day I had the great thought while I was in the shower, to have sauce cups. Like if you went to McDonald's and they had the option of having your fries in sauce or not. Like they'd have a cup with sauce in the bottom and then they put the fries inside of it.

Anywho now that I've shared my idea. (Ahem, all rights reserved, my idea. I may use it in the future to become a multi billionaire.) I change into my outfit and throw my hair up into a high ponytail.  I then grab my bag and run down the stairs.

I make it into the kitchen where I'm met with my mum, dad and Jordan who's face is stuffed full of pancakes.

"Oh, look who decided to awake from the dead," my dad jokes.  His warm smile being super contagious I find myself mirroring his smile.

"Morning," my tone reflects my smile and I am no longer feeling like the butt end of a troll.

Yes my dimension has trolls.

I snatch a pancake off the plate in the centre of the table. Placing it between my teeth. I say a quick goodbye to my parents and ruffle up Jordan's hair before I run out of the door and down the road towards school.

Once I'm a few houses from school, I slow my pace down to a walk. My eyes lazily drifting from person to person as I walk by. Some are regulars and others well they're from mine or other dimensions.

How can I tell?

Well the ones like me, who aren't regulars stand out to me. A bright blue thin stream of light floats harmlessly around them. I can't see my own, but I know for a fact that others can. I don't know how it works or why it happens, but it's handy at times.

I kick a small stone away from me on the footpath and stop to stand in front of the school gates. The bright bold letters hang above. Looking glaringly apparent that they had been polished just this morning. With my thumbs in my pocket I take a deep breath and enter the grounds of school.

Today is going to be a long Monday.
