I had never, ever believed in supernatural occurrences. The idea just seemed too abnormal for my realistic mind to grasp, and I always let it go as a fairytale, a phony story, a myth. Of course, I was wrong, as I am about most concepts.

"What was that?" I yelp, leaping backwards, almost slamming into my best friend, Brenda. I watch as a light that had appeared in front of me two seconds before slowly shimmers down to nothingness.

"What the hell are you talking about?" she laughs, pushing past me. Her attention falls back into her phone, where she scrolls through her Twitter feed, not even seeing the phenomenon that just occurred right in front of her.

"God Brenda, will you ever put that thing down?" I joke as I walk behind her, glancing behind me apprehensively.

We walk for a few minutes more in silence, with no sounds but the distant honking of cars and engines, leaves swirling into the air from the sudden gusts of wind, and the continuous pat, pat, pat of our shoes against the concrete. Just how I like it.

Normal.

I sigh a bit, flicking my eyes towards the tall buildings that are ahead of us. Oh, how I love New York City. But, that's not where we are headed. I gaze downwards and my eyes rest on something far less glamorous.

"Ah. The bus stop," Brenda says, a sarcastic tone to her voice. I snicker and lean against the stop sign on the curb, listening for the bus's engine roaring around the corner. It will be any minute now.

"I've missed you so," I roll my eyes, and a few people around us join our conversation, laughing along. The typical weekday wait at the bus stop. Nothing special.

We continue making small talk, our topics ranging from the weather to the math test from a week ago that still hasn't been passed back.

"Mrs. Hidey. God, I hate her. She is never in a good mood, and when she is, it's at the end of the day," pipes up Isabelle, biting her cheeks impatiently. "When is this bus going to get here?"

I open my mouth to express my agreement, thinking of something to say. "I agree, I mean-"

"Hello!"

Silence.

I turn on my heels, and find myself face to face with...

"I'm Violet," she smiles, "Violet Greene. It's a pleasure."

She holds out her hand, a gleam in her eyes.

I almost choke on my own saliva. Who is this, and why is she introducing herself to me, the geek, the outcast. This.. beautiful girl.

"I.. Uh.." I start, fumbling with my words. "I'm Eli."

I shake her hand and notice everyone whispering.

She beams, shaking my hand almost too optimistically. "It's my first day here. I understand why you lot are confused. My family and I moved just down the street, there." She points down Werner Street and of course, her finger leads to the ugliest, most humiliating house. The joke of the school.

The idea of telling her the story of the last guy who lived there dashes through my mind, but I decide against it. No need to make her uncomfortable this early on.

I look back down at the house. Cringing, I study the green shutters that hang loosely off the house, the tinted windows which are obviously given the tinted look by excessive dust, the wacky roof that could have come straight from a cartoon. My eyes flick back to her, and my cheeks flush as soon as I realize she's still beaming at me.

"Are you kids going to get on, or what?" the cranky bus driver yells. I snap back into reality, now noticing that Violet and I are the only two still standing here. I gather my things quickly and skitter onto the bus, embarrassed.

Violet follows me on, and smiles at the confused bus driver. "Hello, I am Violet," she introduces herself. The bus driver rolls her eyes and motions to the seats. "Sit down kid," she sneers.

I quickly sit down next to Brenda and join everyone else as they watch Violet, pure looks of confusion and amusement glued to their face.

She waves to every single kid, shaking some of their hands.

"Hi, I'm Violet!" she repeats. Over and over. Until she reaches the back. And finally, she plops into a seat, just in time too. The bus driver slams her foot down onto the gas pedal and a small outbreak of surprise is heard throughout the yellow vehicle. And then we're off to school.

And I can't think of anything else but Violet.
