It was dark, gloomy. The sounds of stray cats hitting the wet and sticky pavement echoed off the walls with in the alley. Rats scurried in and out of holes along the empty place. Besides that it was quite. Too quite in fact. Daren Maldonado turned the corner with an old, battered leather jacket high on his neck to hide his stoned face. His eyes were blood shot and everything he saw was blurry and distorted. It numbed his pain. He hadn’t had a job since moving from Georgia. Daren could only hope to get money when he pretended that he was with a charity. If he was a charity, it would be the D.L.D. Daren likes drugs. But that wasn’t what he was there for. He was there to buy his only happiness. Drugs.
He couldn’t help but think of Starla every other minute. She had been one of the highlights of his high school years. Sure, he was the bad-boy-football-playing-heart-breaker back in his day but it wasn’t what he remembered most. It was the twenty minute off-campus coffee “dates” the two used to go on. The days in study hall when they were shushed by the teacher. Daren felt guilty about his drug addiction every time he thought of his little Kenya. He was sure that she wouldn’t approve of it. But then again, Starla could be a goody-two shoes. Even when she was being nastily sarcastic.
When a noise from behind, Daren was too focused on the stars floating above his head to notice. Two silhouettes headed done the alley, covered from head to toe in black. Daren only continued to look above, cross-eyed. When the men finally reached him, one took out a blade, the other cracked his knuckles. It sounded like bones being snapped in half and it sent a shiver down the spine of Daren. He was snapped out of it. He realized he was in danger. The one who cracked his knuckles picked him up by the front of his shirt and threw him against the wall. He slid down it, a trail of warm and thick blood traveling after. He quivered as he looked up at them. “Y-y-your n-not my d-drug dealer.”
“No sonny. He’s dead.” He said with a mental smile. And it was one. Tim Longslo was legally insane. So was his partner George Jameson. But they didn’t think so. But they were lunatics so they couldn’t know better.
George and Tim were dangerous and had done this many times before. It was so easy. That’s why they shipped them off to the Looney Bin in New York. Under lock and key, twenty-four hour surveillance and the best security system invented. Basically, George and Tim were insane because they were criminals. They couldn’t get enough of the rush of crime. Sick was only one of many words used to describe their victims. Daren was next.
Tim continued. “Where’s the girl?” He said moving closer and closer; Daren winced at the sight of his actual face. He had more than five o’clock aftershave and his nose stuck out, far from his head. Tim’s eyes were terrifying, blue on one side of his iris and green on the other for each eye. He was a freak of nature. George was a bit more easy on the eyes. He had a beard connecting at his side burns and was paler then a vampire. His hair was a dark black, the kind that almost appeared a dark blue. George’s face seemed normal.
“W-w-what g-g-girl?”
George gave him a small slit on the top of his forehead. More blood trickled down and Daren wanted drugs desperately. He would have killed for it. But he was being killed for something else. “Tell me where my daughter is. Where is Kenya?” Spoke George for the first time at their ‘gathering’.
Tim grabbed him by the shirt again and shoved their victim into the wall, suspended. Suddenly, George’s blade came to his throat and Daren took a large gulp as he faced facts. He had to tell them where Starla was. His life depended on it. Literally.
