We sat on the rocky surface of a hill in front of his house.
We sat until the trees around us were nothing but distant blurs in the background. Until time to us was just the rise and fall of our ruptured heartbeats. We kissed, we kissed and kissed until we no longer knew any other taste and we no longer knew what time of day it was.Until we fell in love with the colorful world hidden in each other's eyes.
"I'm high as fuck right now," he says with a laugh. His head tilts back and his hair blows with the wind. Beautiful. I rest my head on his shoulder, taking in the sweet smell of his sweater. He breathes my name, jumping his shoulder to make me look at him.
"What"s wrong?" I ask.
His eyes are filled with something I can't place. Sadness? Sorrow? Pain? His hand comes up to hold my cheek. Their knobby knuckles caressing my skin softly and stopping at the birthmark near my ear. "I always wonder what you're thinking about when you're with me." A sad smile.
I lean into his touch and close my eyes. "You're always talking about something at school but when you're with me you're so quiet. What's on your mind, boo?"
I turn away from him and looked out at the town below us. The blazing lights a blur of each other, each light a splash of color on the blank place known as Edwards. I can feel his hand on mine, squeezing each finger slowly as he waits for some kind of response. How do I tell him that he is a million broken possiblities, each one greater than the next. That he is a miracle because everything inside works its hardest to keep him alive. How do I tell him that every time I'm with him I am speechless. That I am enthralled by the thought that the stars have trapped themselves in his eyes. I almost laugh at that last one.
"I think I'm high too."
He laughs loudly at this. A rumble that starts deep in his throat before pushing past his lips. It echoes around us and my heart skips. I love him. "Come on, boobear. It's getting dark and cold," he says after he's humbled himself.
We walk down carefully, hand in hand and heads light. We carefully make our way down the rocky path that had lead up to our spot on the hillside. He gives my hand an occasional squeeze, as of making sure I'm not gone yet. "I'm here, baby," I whisper quietly. He pulls me into his side as we make our way up his front steps and in through the door. The warm welcomes us. Seeping through our sweaters and wrapping itself around our stiff joints from the cold.
He leads me down a small set of stairs, down a short hall and into his room. The door is closed behind us and I take a seat on the loveseat next to his bed. He takes off his sweater and his shirt rides up. My eyes wander to the pale, exposed skin of his stomach. A deep want burns inside of me and I force myself to look away. He jumps onto his bed and scoots into the corner; patting the space next to him. "You know I hate when you do that." He gives me a sad pout and taps the space next to him again. With a roll of my eyes, I get up and take off my sweater and then my shoes.
I slide carefully into the spot next to him and he wraps the blanket around us. My head rests on his chests. The steady beat of his heart almost enough to lull me to sleep.
"Spend the night with me?" It's the same question he asks every time I lay with him. We both know the answer to that yet he never seems to give up.
"I can't."
He nods and rests his chin on my head before lifting it back up to place a longing kiss on my forehead. He sighs and holds me tighter. I listen to each of his breaths, feeling his chest rise with each one and my hands trace his side. The expanse of his ribs expand as he inhales at a particularly ticklish poke.
"Go to sleep, T," he mumbles into my skin.
And I do fall asleep eventually. Despite everything in my body telling me that I can't. That I have to be home soon. But I ignore it this one time and fall asleep in his arms.
To the sound of his breaths and to the sound of our hearts syncing together to make a symphony .
