June 4

Today I was at the lake with my mom and my brother, Toklo.  I love the lake it is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.  The water was green-blue with salmon running through it.  My Mother said that when Toklo and I are bigger she is going to teach us to catch them.  My mom has told me of stories with many Grizzly bears in them, but I had never thought there could ever be as many as there were there.

I was running around when this giant bear reared up on his back legs about to tackle this other bear who was slightly smaller and younger than him and already had a couple bad gashes on his back already.  I was so scared; I mean I don’t understand why the older bear would want to hurt the younger bear so badly.  What was even worse was that no one was doing anything about it.  I felt so sick to my stomach, and everything started to blur.  I don’t quite remember how I got here but I did.  I am in a small rock cave on the side of a hill all alone and cold.  My paws are cut up, probably from the rocks I must have gone over to get here, and I don’t know how to get back to my mommy.

I woke up this morning to a big bear that looks like he is big enough to eat me whole, ready to kill me.  As I ran my paws started to bleed again and my legs were cramped from all the running I did yesterday.  I was sure I was dead meat.  After a little while he slowed down and finally stopped chasing me.  Just in time too.  I swear I was about to pass out.

I am so hungry.   What do bears eat anyways?  My mom has only told me about blue berries, but there weren’t any around so I decided to eat some roots I dug up out of the ground.  They weren’t very good though.  I had decided to keep to keep going the direction the bear had sent me.  Know what, I think this is going to be really fun.

This morning was just not my morning.  First I fell out of the tree I slept in last night, then I stepped on a thorn, it really hurt.  After that I smelt something in the air, it smelt so good, so I followed the smell.  It ended up being a bunny.  At first I was a little hesitant, I had never eaten a bunny before, I mean all I have ever eaten is my mom’s milk, blue berries and I guess now roots.  I did not even know if bears ate bunnies, but my bear instincts told me to eat it.  At first it was a little chewy and was very salty but the juices just exploded in my mouth, so I kept eating.  Well until this bear, a young female only about a year older than me but black, so we were the same size, pushed me over and bellowed at me, “This is mine.  What do you think you are doing?”  I told her I was sorry, I did not know, how I got lost, have not eaten anything and how no matter if you are a small female, who means no harm, a bears chase you away from them.  She just sat there while I talked then laughed a little when I got to the end but came over and gave me the rest of her bunny I had already started to eat.  She said it was her second kill of the day.  I quickly ate it and then came back to her cave with her.  Well we walked she told me she had lost her mom three months ago.  Her mom had been sick for as long as Mika could remember.  It turns out that Mika is actually 2 years older than me, but her mom had taught her all she needs to know to survive when she was my age because she was not sure how long she would live for.  Mika’s cave is not huge, but it is warm and cozy.  She said I can stay here for as long as I want.  Yah!!!

Today we went to pick black berries in the black berry field.  They are so good, you just have to be careful because there are thorns protecting them, but it is worth it.  They are even better then blue berries.  They are just so sweet and juicy.  Mika also showed me how to catch bunnies.  We sat beside the bunny hole and when one came out you caught it and ran away from the hole as fast as you can, because you don’t want the other bunnies in the hole to smell death.  We ended up catching 4 in total, I caught 2 of them.

Today I found my family. This is how it happened.  This morning Mika told me she was going to take me to the lake to teach me how to fish.  I was so excited I would get to learn how to fish that when we got there I did not recognize it because there weren’t very many bears there.  She told me that she could only go there on certain days because there were not as many brown bears around and she could do as she pleased without being bothered.  She caught one and we shared it, then I tried but it did not get very far.  We were playing around in the water when I heard someone call me, “Evol!  Is that you?”  It ended up being my mom and Toklo.  They were so happy they found me and I was happy they found me too.

My mom asked Mika if she would like to be part of our family.  Now I have a sister a brother, and my mom.  I love them so much!
