Adrienne.

“Five, six, seven, eight!” I shouted as we started our cheer. All eyes were on us as we broke into splits and danced around. I looked up into the stands and saw my friends and teachers sitting in their seats. Then, I saw Mr. Stein looking as creepy as always. There was always something about him that made me want to stay away. Unfortunately, I couldn’t do that because he was my home room teacher and he was my third period. Ughh. But, it didn’t matter to me. I just couldn’t wait to see my, boo, Issa tonight.

Everyone on the squad was doing the routine perfectly, and all was going fine, until something hit me hard in the back of the head. Which was odd, because I was at the top of the pyramid. I only recall remembering a handful of things;

Me yelling in pain,

Mr. Stein getting up and walking away from the bleachers to somewhere unknown,

And me blacking out—

Beep, beep, beep.

I woke up to the sound of beeping near by me as I was reliving that night in my dreams. “Oh sweetheart,” my mother jumped out of the seat she was sitting in and rushed over to me. Then, I realized I was in a hospital. Why was I in a hospital? Then, everything came back to me. I tried to sit up, but my head was pounding excruciatingly.

“Honey, stay laying down for a while or else that’s gonna hurt,” said my mom,“I would know.” What? “H-how would you know, M-” “Nevermind that sweetie, I’ll explain everything later,” she interrupted me. Before I could protest, the nurse came in. She was probably middle-aged, maybe in her mid-forties.

“How long have I been in here?” I questioned the nurse. " About two weeks.." she trailed off. “What? Why?” I asked. “Y-you were in a coma, Adrienne,” my mom answered for her. What? I was in a coma? “She’ll be ready to go in a few minutes,” the nurse spoke to my mother. “Thank you,” she replied.

When we arrived home, my dad was sitting at the dining room table looking very serious. “Sweetheart, we need to talk,” he looked at me very sternly. What about that wouldn’t make me feel like I was in trouble? He motioned for me to sit down across from him. Mom went and sat next to him so that they were both facing me.

“Your powers are settling in,” Mom said looking at my facial expression. For awhile, everyone just sat there. Then, I almost died laughing. “Adrienne, this is serious,” my dad warned me. I shot him a questioning look, “What? Am I being Punk’d?” I asked him. “No Adrienne, this is very serious,” he answered. “No. No. I’m sorry, I just am not capable of believing that,” I said while shaking my head no.

“Adrienne, this isn’t funny,” my mom snapped at me. “Oh, it’s not? Fine then, feel free to prove it to me that I have powers,” I replied while using my fingers as quotation marks around the word “powers.” After that, I’m pretty sure my reality changed completely. I watched as my father looked directly at the refrigerator, and it completely lifted off the ground.

I stumbled backwards in my chair. “What? How are you- what __are_ you?” I sputtered. “The question is, Sweetie, what are we?” said my mom, " we are Phantalects." " What the hell is a Phantalect?" I practically shouted at them. Usually I never cuss around my parents, but this an exception." And we are Telemai Phantalects," said Dad.

“Dad, you’re telling me all this sh*t like I understand it!” I exclaimed. “Let me start this off simple,” Mom said slowly,“Phantalects are people with special powers that exceed those of humans. We date all the way back to the ancient Greeks.”

“There are four types of Phantalects; The ones that control water or liquids, they are called Watermai (water-My), the ones that can tell the future, they are called psychmai (psych-my), the ones that control fire, they are called pyromai, and last, but not least are those who have telekinesis, can levitate things, and can read minds from time to time. That’s what we are. Telemai,” Dad finished.

“T-this is a lot to take,” I said mostly to myself. “We know honey,” said Mom, “But we’re here for you. But there’s something you need to know. Like everything else, we have a higher power, or government. It’s called ‘The Society’. You can’t tell anyone about this, if you do,” she gulped, ready to tell me the worst," they’ll find you, and kill you."

“That is why it’s important that you’re careful with your powers. They’re very unpredictable while they’re settling in. So everyday I’ll be training you how to use your powers. It’s better to help you control them now than later,” Dad spoke strictly," you can go to bed now."

That night I could sleep at all with all this new information buzzing around in my head, so I turned on some music. I made it really loud and it was getting stuffy so I opened my window. Soon rocks were being thrown at my window by my neighbor Craig. I went over to my window and looked across into his window. “What?” I asked tired and boredly.

“Please turn that off,” he begged," I can’t sleep and I got a test tomorrow." Usually, I would’ve turn up more music even more, but I still had everything my parents told me on my mind so I just turned off the music. I saw Craig give a puzzled expression, and then go back into his room. After that, plopped on my bed and soon I actually fell asleep.

That morning, I woke up with an enormous tattoo on my arm.
