Chapter One:

I brushed my hair quickly and ran downstairs to say goodbye to my parents and Tommy. My father was sitting at the table reading the newspaper and my mother was drinking orange juice. I glanced around the place for Tommy and I discovered him sitting at my grand piano.

“I’m going to school. Bye, pumpkin,” I said, kissing him on the cheek.

“I miss school, Lee-lee,” He said.

I stared at the pitiful five year old boy.

“I know you do, pumpkin, but you’re too sick to go to school,” I told him.

“Mommy says I have another doctor’s appointment today,” He said.

“Mom, why didn’t you tell me about this?” I turned around to ask her.

“I’m so sorry, Marilee. I completely forgot,” She said.

“Do you want me to come straight after school?” I asked.

She nodded. I kissed Tommy and ran out the front door and got in my car. I would have to drive fast if I wanted to get to school early enough to practice piano in the music room.

Today was my first day at school as a senior. I didn’t really have the chance to be excited about it between all of the piano recitals and Tommy’s hospital visits.

I pulled into the student parking lot of my school and parked in my usual spot. As I practically ran into the school, I was greeted by my best friend Danni.

“Marilee! I missed you so much,” She said.

“How was your trip to Italy?” I asked.

“It was amazing! There were so many cute boys too,” She said.

I laughed.

“Well, I’ll catch up with you later, I’ve gotta get to the –”

“Music room,” She finished for me. We hugged and then she ran off.

When I walked into the music room, I noticed a boy was sitting at the piano playing “Flight Of The Bumblebee” by Rachmaninoff. He was playing it flawlessly. Normally I’m never the type to just go up to a person, but this time something pushed me towards him. I sat beside him on the bench and he looked up at me. He had brown eyes and black hair. He was Asian, and very attractive.

“Hi,” I said nervously.

“Hello?” It almost came out as a question for him.

“Sorry for intruding,” I apologized.

He said nothing.

“It’s just that I usually practice here every day before school, and –”

“You want me to leave,” He stated.

“No, not at all! I just heard you playing, and it was flawless,” I said.

He smiled and said, “Thanks. I’m JD.”

“JD? Does that stand for something?” I asked.

“James Daitaro Takahashi,” He said.

“Hi James, I’m Marilee Richards,” I introduced myself.

“Call me JD, please. I hate James,” James said.

“No, I think I’ll call you James,” I teased him.

“Fine, I get to make up a nickname for you, then!” James said.
