Prologue

“You sure you have to go?” Lailani asked with tears welling up in her big brown eyes.

“Yeah…Dad’s going on tour with them and he doesn’t want Tutu overwhelmed again for being gone so long,” I said with a sigh.

“But he was only gone for three months…how long will he be gone?” She asked, sniffling, furiously wiping her tears away.

I stare up at the twinkling stars above, taking a deep breath, the tears stinging at the corners of my eyes. “Six months to a year…” I mumbled.

She sits up and screeches, “A YEAR?! Lei! That’s too long you’ll be away from home, what are you going to do over the summer? What about school, eh?”

“That’s all taken care of, I’ll be home schooled during that time, besides, I’ll finally get to meet One Direction, you know? That one band that everyone compares to The Beatles…the one you kept watching, with that cute boy—what’s his name again?” I chuckled.

“ZAYN JAWAAD MALIK!” She screamed at the top of her lungs.

“You’re so aznuts over the guy. It’s not like he’d come and be like, Lailani Kupahawa, MARRY ME!” I said getting up mimicking a British accent, however, being around Dad and his Irishness…I sound more Irish when forcing the accent. When I’m mad, the accent will slip out at times.

“There’s a reason your mother put Pele as your middle name!” She playfully nudged me.

“Because that’s Tutu’s name?” I said smirking.

“The personality, the fire, the absolute fire that’ll burn the hearts of millions…just like you’re burning mine!” She fell over and rolled on the cool grass.

“You’re so weird, Lani…” I shook my head.

“So Lorelei, you’re going to meet the famed One Direction, eh?” I heard a familiar voice say from down the hill Lani and I are resting upon.

“Yeah, I get to meet them in 48 hours, can you believe that?” I said as I finally see the tall, sun-kissed tan, blonde hair, brown eyed, Maki come running towards us. He slid on the grass and rolled over next to us, instantly staining his white shirt.

“Your mother is going to kill you when she sees that shirt is ruined!” I giggle.

“Eh, you only live once, as they said, right, brudda?” He winked at Lani and me as we rolled our eyes.

“I’m really going to miss you, blondie,” I said with a big sigh. I’ve always sort of liked Maki, in a more than a friend way, but I never said anything because, to be honest, I don’t think I’m ready for a relationship. It’s just too much emotional baggage. I mean, when Dad and I lost Mom, it was painful enough. I don’t want to go through that.

“Aww how sweet!” I see Kanu jump out of a tree holding coconuts in his hand; I knew he just got off from work. His black hair is tied up in a long pony tail, his reddish skin smeared with dirt from the falls he must have broken and his white smock littered in green and brown splotches.

“Shut up, Kanupa!” I smirked.

“I hate when you call me by that…it’s such a feminine name!” He groaned dropping the coconuts and collapsing on Maki.

“HEY GET OFF ME!” Maki yelled.

“Shh! The neighbors are asleep and Dad will flip if he finds out I snuck out again,” I whispered.

“True…so this is our last hurrah?” Lani said.

“It’s not our last; I’ll be back next year…hopefully. Besides, Dad has a nice penthouse and he said when the boys are on their two week break next month he’ll fly you all out to London to come see us!” I said with a smile.

“And I’ll get to meet my future husband…” Lani smiled stupidly.

“Would you be mad if Zayn Maliwhohah fell for Lei instead of youuu?” Kanu jokingly said.

“Um, I’d be disappointed, but not mad!” She nudged me as I rolled my eyes.

“I agree, he is my second celeb crush, but that doesn’t mean I’d throw myself at him!” I giggled.

“Sure you would,” Maki winks at me, “Oh, I almost forgot, I got you this at Popu’s shop earlier today, you know, so you won’t forget home…” His voice trails off as he checks his bag and takes out a charm bracelet…my charm bracelet.

“That’s my charm bracelet, you idiot!” I crossed my arms as I snatched the bracelet back.

“Check the charms on it,” Lani said with a big smile.

I looked closely and I quickly noticed there hung a little blue surf board charm, a purple seashell charm, and a gold coconut charm. I teared up just remembering what each represented and who got me what. My heart sinks knowing that I have to leave them behind. I turned to hug all of them, the tears streaming down my face.

“Oh Lei…” Lani sobbed as the other two are forcing back their tears.

“Don’t ever, ever forget us, stay grounded just like your dad and don’t ever forget where you came from!” Lani pleaded with me, hugging me tighter.

“I promise, I won’t, I promise. Hawaii is my homeland, you’re all my friends, and I will never forget the beaches, the surf, the sun, the rocky paths, and this hill…” I said through broken sobs as the guys wiped away their tears now.

“Be safe, Lei. We’ll support you all the way on Twitter and Tumblr and don’t forget to post pictures, eh?” Kanu said.

I nod. We all laid down in a circle and sit under the sparkling stars and the bright full moon. It’s the perfect moment to spend with my friends and the most peaceful. Anyone could hear the sounds of the waves from a far, the soft hum of the crickets and the cool ocean breeze. This will be the last time I’ll ever feel this in a long time, I inhale deeply, letting the air rush through my lungs.

“Aloha oe, aloha oe,” I began to sing.

“E ke onaona noho i ka lipo,” Lani joined in.

“One fond embrace,” the boys chimed.

“A hoʻi aʻe au….until we meet again,” we sang weakly, letting the tears fall from our faces.

“Until…we…meet…again…” I sang once more and we all hold hands staring up at the perfect starry and moonlit sky.
