"That sucks" is not a sentiment. I don't care how you say it, “that sucks” does not make me feel better when I tell you my dog died. You think I don't know it sucks? Very informative. If you really cared, you would at least have something sweet or positive to say. And even if you don't, just try. I know you're not putting much effort into trying when I hear that. When you take the time to try to make me feel better, that is a good friend. Saying "that sucks" and then moving on with your business makes me feel unimportant and like I'm not even worth 5 seconds of your precious time.
