Normani didn't know what was happening.
One minute she was peacefully adding her new sketch to her folder, next she was kicking and screaming in Ms. Lovato's arms.
"Normani, darling, please calm down. This is a good thing!" Ms. Lovato's voice rang through her ears, but it all sounded like jiberish to the upset girl.
And, to make matters worse, Dinah was crying also, not wanting to even make eye contact with any other person in this room.
"Mani, its okay. This is so exciting! You're gonna have a mother now and she's going to love you and appreciate your talents and protect you and--"
"NO! I N-NO WANNA GO! I'LL MISS DJ!" The small girl thrashed, looking around for her best friend.
She couldn't understand why Miss Lovato thought this was a good thing. She was going to be separated from her only best friend, and those were hard to make. Without Dinah, she's not herself. So, she kicked and screamed in hopes that the older woman would even consider her pleas.
Ms. Lovato held the crying girl, asking a fellow child that passed by to go to her office and get the nice lady to come in the chaotic room.
"Hi Dems, what-- holy fuck, what happened?!" Camila asked concerned, immediately turning protective. "If it's those girls, I swear I will..."
"No, Mila, she didn't take the news well." Demi said, looking at the now calmer, but still sobbing girl and her best friend, who hid herself in the closet with the door open.
"Let me try." Camila said, getting Normani from Demi's arms before sending her out.
"Normani?" She called out softly, watching how the crying girl looked around expectantly, before looking beside her to see Miss Camila, the nice lady.
Maybe she can help her.
"Hi babe. What got you all upset, hmm?" Camila asked, rubbing her hand on the African American's arm softly, somehow causing a calming effect.
"I don't wanna go. I don't wanna go. I don't wanna leave DJ here." Normani cried, looking at Miss Camila with more tears, if possible, forming in her eyes.
"Well, do you wanna make a solution to this problem?" Camila asked in a hushed voice, watching how the crying girl was now wiping her tears, looking at Camila like she held the small girl's life in her hands.
A small nod was all that was granted to Camila, before she leaned down into Normani's ears.
"Maybe every few weeks, we can visit Dinah here. Would you like that?" Camila asked quietly, knowing that she would have time for that sometimes.
Camila basically worked from home. So she knew it wouldn't be an issue bringing Normani to see Dinah every so often.
"Yes. I would." Normani said gratefully, not really understanding what Miss Camila said before everything clicked for her.
Miss Camila was going to adopt her. Miss Camila is the reason she was going to be taken away from her best friend forever.
"NO! NO, GO AWAY! I DON'T WANNA GO! I NEED DJ!!" The brown eyed girl immediately jumped, watching how the young girl that was in her lap was now kicking and screaming again.
"Normani, calm down honey, its okay." Demi immediately tried to calm the young one, sighing when all of her efforts were useless.
"Mani? Are you okay?" Dinah's voice sounded full of worry, as she made her way towards her crying best friend, engulfing her in a hug. The young Polynesian didn't like it when her best friend was upset, and she'll do anything to keep her and make her happy. The African American calmed down immediately, relaxing in her arms.
"D-D-DJ, I-I-I can't g-go without you. I c-can't." Normani cried, as Dinah rubbed her back while hugging her.
"Yeah you can, Manibear. 'emember what we talked about earlier? I will never forget you. You will always be in my heart. I love you, and Miss Camila seems like a nice mommy for you. I know I'll find my own mommy one day, but for now, I'm happy for you." Dinah explained with a confident tone, causing the older child to smile in tears. "Plus, now you don't have ta worry 'bout Lucy no more." She added, causing both girls to errupt in giggles.
Dinah released the hug, before backing away with a watery smile, which looked forced, like it was about to falter into sobs soon. "I needa go to the bathroom." She said, before running into the bathroom, closing the door.
"Alright, how about you get packed up while I go check on Dinah, okay?" Camila asked, mentally cheering as the now calm girl was getting all of her items and placing them inside of the new bag Camila brought, just in case anything like this happened.
Camila's footsteps were as light as a feather, before making her way to the bathroom, where she sat beside Dinah on the floor.
"Somebody looks unhappy. Those tears in your beautiful eyes tell me. And the frown on your face does too." Camila brought up, lifting Dinah's chin with her index finger. "Can you tell Miss Camila what's going on?"
The Polynesian looked at the lady in her eyes, before looking away.
"I'll miss Mani." She muttered quietly, not facing Camila.
"Well, did you tell Normani how you feel?" Camila asked, a quiet sigh leaving her lips when the child didn't answer her.
"Dinah, honey, you need to tell Normani how you feel. She was crying over you also, and I bet that you guys will meet again in the future." Camila said, looking at Dinah who had more tears streaming down her face.
"She supposed to be happy! I can't be sad over something good that happens to her! I'm not a good friend." The Polynesian cried softly, not wanting the older girl to hear her. "What if we never see each other again?!"
"What if you guys do see each other again?" Camila fired back softly, watching how the young girl wiped her tears and attempted to stop more from falling. "Why are you doing this, darling." Camila asked, pulling the girl's clothed arm from her face, before she turned her eyes red.
"My old momma said if I cry, I'm a baby and I'm weak 'cause crying is for weak people and she didn't give 'irth to weak kids." Dinah explained, causing Camila to gasp quietly.
"Well, your old momma is wrong. Crying is for strong people too and you wanna know the way you can grow stronger?" Camila asked, wiping away the tears from Dinah's cheek with her thumb.
"By eating my fruits and veggies?" She guess, innocence laced in her voice.
Camila laughed lightly. "This is why I love children." She muttered, before answering her question. "Yeah, you grow big and strong from eating your fruits and vegetables, but you can also grow big and strong by crying. Because we are all human and we all cry. If we don't cry, then we just can't be ourselves!" Camila explained, watching how the small girl nodded, and she had a small smile on her face.
"So, Mani leave forever?" Dinah asked, sadness laced in her voice.
"Nope, trust me, she's not gone forever."
