It came right out from the bushes and limped towards your tree. Emma screamed and cried harder at the same time, Deborah closed her eyes.
"Whah are you doing?!" Emma squirmed as she tried to break loose.
"Ah'm hrying hoo apparahe!" Deborah answered.
Oh shit oh shit oh shit.
You tugged at the rope tied around your hands, even if you thought it was useless. Should I try to apparate too? It was a dilemma as you face two choices: risk getting splinched or get eaten alive.
Redds doubled his efforts in trying to get your wand, "hold on buddy, ah'm almohh hhere..."
Two more emerged from behind the first one, "gnuhhhh," they moaned in unison. And now the shit has officially hit the fan.
Captain closed his eyes and held his head up. Knowing him for years, this gesture only means one thing: I surrender. He sat still and didn't tug at his ropes nor did anything that suggested him putting up a fight for his life. He's given up.
You felt Tabby freeze beside you, her eyes wide and staring straight ahead.
"Are you hhinking of hohmhing?" You whisper to her.
No reply.
"Habby," you nudge her, "Habh..."
You looked around you, Is this really the end? There was nothing in the air but Emma's wailing and the undead's moans, Captain didn't budge, Deborah's face was already purple from trying to apparate, fire ants were starting to gather on Delia, and Redds was about to give up on Puck.
And then the most unexpected thing happened.
Tabitha stood up and made a run for the bat, her wrists skinned and bleeding. She swung it hard on the nearest zombie and kept hitting it. Deborah apparated, picked up Doug, and started on the two others. Tabby took off her gag and whistled, Ajax swooped in and landed on Puck's back.
"Geh uh wand boy, c'mon, hhah's a good boy," Redds lifted Puck's shirt with his foot.
You watch as Tabitha and Deborah fight off more zombies walking towards the clearing.
"What are you doing, man? Get up!" Redds shouts as he tosses the wand to you. It took you a moment to realize that you're not tied and gagged anymore.
"Into the cars, everyone! Now!" he ushers the rest of the group. Captain sprang to his feet and hoisted Puck onto his shoulders, "what about Delia?"
"Leave her," Deborah said as she climbed into the Innova with Captain.
"But--" Emma insists, "it's Delia, Deb!"
"She's right," you pull her arm, "we have to leave her here."
"Tabs, stop!" Redds called out, "get in!"
In no less than a minute, the clearing was already full of the biting devils. You watch them tear apart Delia's corpse as they feast on it.
"Don't look," you turn Emma's head away from the window as you hold her in your arms, "there's nothing we could do about it, okay? Just let it go."
"Where do we go now?" Tabby pants in the passenger's seat, "should we go back to the highway?"
"No, definitely not," Redds stepped on the gas, "I think that's where they're coming from. The pile-up was there for a reason."
"Are you saying it's a kind of a shield or something?" you ask.
"Just a theory. We need to find a way around it and into the town proper."
"But what about my sister?" Emma trembled, "aren't we going to find her?"
Redds stared at you via the rearview mirror. He's asking you something, What do you think?
"I don't call the shots here," you tell him.
"Neither do I," he frowns.
"Yes you do," Tabby says, "look, Redds, our car's in the lead now. Morgan's not the boss here anymore."
