“Have a good day hun! Take good care of yourself.” Madison’s mother, Evelyn, called as she pulled away with a friendly double tap on the hooter.

“Ok! I will!” she called in reply.

Madison turned to face a big old publically used, publically smelling school, and took in a big whiff of that publically used text book air.

School, it’s great to be back.

Maddy thought with a smile, making her way up the old cement steps.

Ordinarily school would be dreaded by all, but Maddy was just thankful it wasn’t a medical institution.  There were quite a few new face’s she noticed while making her way into the building to start class. Some were popular-looking girls, some brawny-looking guys, and the occasional glasses-wearer carrying stacks of books.

Look like some knowledge hungry brain-feeders.

The last time she was in school was about half a year ago.  Her parents kept her enrolled in the same school even while she was in hospital. It would have been nice to travel and meet new people, but she didn’t mind.  She enjoyed the familiarity of always coming back to one place.

All the other girls, Maddy noticed, were wearing nice fashionable clothing, showing of bronze tans and smooth skin.  Madison, on the other hand, had to keep to her dully coloured Sport hoody with a jersey and long sleeve underneath that.

Her heart condition left her anaemic and it made it difficult for her body to keep a regular temperature and if she got to cold she was at risk of another seizure.   Maddy was dressed like an Eskimo, but she tried her best not to feel awkward or left out.

Not that Maddy actually wanted to show off her skin.  Her having to keep thickly insulated at all times didn’t offer her much of a tan.  She was almost glad she could hide her terribly pale skin.  She could swear she was translucent.  But that wasn’t going to ruin life for her.

No matter how short...

She looked down and smiled. At least she had nice jeans.

“Mads?”  A voice called out her name, and her eyes darted around searching desperately for its source.

Only one person called Maddy that.

“Linnsey?” Maddy prayed that her assumption was correct.

Her view reached out over the sea of heads in search of one.  A dark blond head popped up and fell back down. Someone was jumping, breaking the plane of scalps.   Maddy smiled wide and her weak heart swelled with joy.

“Lindsey!” she waved, and could not control the beam overtaking her face.

“Maddy!” her old friend called again, with just as big a smile.

She made her way over to Madison in a half sprint barely dodging the other guys and girls, and nearly tripping herself more than once.  After successfully manoeuvring her way over to Madison, the two girls hugged each other tightly, giggling in near-tears joy.

Lynn Grayson had been Madison’s best friend ever since fourth grade and she’d been Maddy’s only consistent bond because of her disease. If she made other friends, they’d eventually move away and lose contact, but Lynn never stopped being there for Maddy. They were practically sisters.

“You’re finally back!” Lynn cooed not releasing Maddy from the epic friendship hug, “Where have you been? I missed you like crazy.” She held Maddy at arm’s length, examining her up and down, like a package she’d been expecting for some time that finally arrived.
