The story, told in a series of vignettes, takes place over the course of three time periods: their childhood, the summer of 2019, and November 2019.

THEY WERE STILL KIDS BACK THEN. They were the colorful paper birds and the newspaper hats they creased under their fingertips. They were the paint they smeared on their skin and the crayon they marked on the wall. They were their bruises and boo boos and bandaids and kisses. They were kids.
And they had every right to be.
[ ⧖ ] summer 2019
THEY SPENT FIFTEEN SUMMERS TOGETHER, and nothing changed. They still play with colorful birds and newspapers. They still play with paint and crayons. They still explore the forest. They still play and wander and tease and hurt. They are still kids.
But they aren't so sure if they can be.

THEY HAVE GROWN UP TOO FAST. They have been thrust into a world of secrecy and deceit. They have been thrust into a world where the past is buried six feet under. They have been thrust into a world that believes in hiding the truth and pretending nothing is wrong.
They have grown enough to sense it—the plasticity, the hostility between their parents—but they haven't grown enough to decide if they would do anything about it.
