my shift was over. i headed home and went straight to my bed. damn im tired.
i got up and took my apron and hat off. as i dropped my apron to the floor, the same piece of paper shawn wrote his number on fell out. i smiled and grabbed it, typing his number into my phone.
i hesitated before sending him a text. what if he's completely messing with me? for all i know, this isnt his number and he's just messing with me. oh well, ill never know if i dont try.
to- shawn:) - hi! its avery :)
from- shawn:) - hey, didn't know if you were ever gonna text me. ;)
to- shawn:) - well i just got off work, and i didnt get my phone till i got off work.
from - shawn:) - i see. well, im going to be back in detroit some time soon! maybe we can catch up? :)
to- shawn:) - id love that.
from- shawn:) - great:) ill be sure to let you know when ill be back.
to- shawn:) - okie doky:)
i smiled as i sat my phone down on my nightstand beside my bed.
"he uses an uncomfortable amount of smiley faces when he texts." i said to myself, laughing at the fact that i talk to myself more than anyone.
i plopped down on my bed, grabbing my TV remote and turning on netflix. i've never been much into the basic netflix series, i mean yeah, stranger things is pretty cool. but have any of you ever watched the ranch? who knew three cattle owners would be so funny.
and they recently released a new season, time to binge.
i turned it on, instantly laughing. this show is so great.
after about fifteen minutes into the show, my mom yelled from downstairs.
"dinner's ready!"
i sighed and paused my tv, running down the stairs to see my mom setting the table for me, her, and my little brother Steven.
steven was already at table, he never really leaves mom's side. he's a total mommas boy. and he's 15, so girls find it super cute that he's like this.
"how was work honey?" my mom asked me.
"super busy, and eventful." i said, refusing to bring up the whole thing with shawn. she'd probably freak out.
my dad left my mom when i was ten, and steven was 8. we were old enough to understand what was going on, but that didn't change the fact that we were absolutely devastated.
we haven't seen our dad since. he confessed to my mom that he had been cheating on her for two months, and that he would be leaving. my mom, the poor desperate thing, even offered to give him another chance, which blew my mind. he had been cheating for two months and she was gonna forgive him? absolutely not. i would not allow it.
ever since then, she has become not too fond of men. and she does not want me to go near them.
"they only want one thing." she always tells me.
and if she were to find out it was with this specific guy, she'd lose her mind. and that we exchanged numbers? she'd explode.
"eventful? how so? it's just a coffee shop." she laughed as she gave us all a cup of water.
my eyes widened and i looked over at steven for some reason. he furrowed his eyebrows together in confusion and mouthed me a "what?". i looked back at my mom and gave her an awkward smile.
"oh um, this girl she uh, she accidentally dropped her drink then slipped in it." i lied.
she laughed a little and sat down.
"poor thing!" she said.
i sighed, thanking god that i was able to make something up that quickly.
—
"oh wow, that was super good mom! thank you!" i said and took my dishes to the sink, rinsing them off and putting them in the dishwasher.
"no problem sweetie, im going to bed now guys. i have to wake up extra early tomorrow for work, i have a meeting at 6." she sighed.
"alright. love you momma" i said and hugged her.
"love you guys too." she said, hugging us back.
