The Reaping, Pt 2

"after that everyone looked around, trying to figure out who this girl was. i didn't need to do that. i knew who that girl was. it was me."

i took a deep breath as the peacekeepers came in my direction. as they grabbed my arms I tried to push them away as I'd rather walk up on my own but it just made them holding my arms harder.

"come on now, we do not have the whole day on us darling" cressida said as I walked up on the stage. i found arden in the crowd, and I saw that feeling of being helpless in his eyes.

"now, the boys", she said and walked to the other bowl and went through the same process. i didn't pay attention to cressida as I were staring down at my feet, trying to realize this whole thing actually happened, but when she said that name, I was pulled back to reality.

"Arden Balker"

i stared at him, and he stared back. as they started to escort him up, i could feel my fingertips starting to shake. i didn't dare to look at him, because I knew, that at least one of us had to die in the end.

"five minutes" the peacekeeper that let in my mother and sister in the visiting room said to me. i immediately ran to they and hugged them. but I didn't cry, since our dad died when I was six I haven't cried, at all.

"arden" I whispered in my mother's ear. she understood and just shushed me. my sister kissed me on my forehead and wished me good luck, but I could see in her eyes that for her, it was an goodbye. but those five minutes went fast, so they went to Arden's room and talked to him.

i waited for what probably was another five minutes until the peacekeeper told me to come. the second that I walked out of the room, arden did the same. i ran to him and hugged him, i buried my face in his shoulder and we just stood there, silently until the peacekeepers told us to move.

we walked side to side and stepped into the car that would drive us to the train station. the whole drive we sat quietly, because we knew that it were smarter to wait until we were alone to say what were on our minds.
