New York, 1980-90's I walked along the road and listened to my music, careful to tuck my earbud wires into my sweatshirt so that no one would question them. Earbuds were a good invention. Hard to believe there was a time where I lived without them. I finally came across the cop cars are lined up on the side of the road. I cautiously approached the line of cars. I listened for the specific sound.
"Daddy!" There it is. I approach the officers.
"Aye. Aye." They warm. I flash my badge.
"Let me through." I pull my hood off.
"Fine. Detective Kiera." One mockingly says. I walk over to the body and the little boy.
"Hi Mattie." I squat down next to Jack's body. The little boy standing over Jack looks up at me.
"Who are you?" He sniffles.
"I'm a friend. My name is Holly. Come with me?" I offer my arms out to him. He nods. I pick him up and carry him away from the sight. "Your Dad was a good man." I say as I carry him back inside. I set him down in the house. "Can I fix you something to eat?" I ask him.
"Yes please." He nods. I cook up some macaroni and cheese. I put it in a bowl and stick it in front of him. I slide into the seat across from him.
"I figured I'd hang with you until she comes." I say.
"Who?" Matt looks up at me.
"You know." I nod. There's a knock at the door. "I wasn't here. Don't give up Mattie." I say before escaping out the back door and into the night. ____________________________________
Hell's kitchen, New York - Present Day
I walk on the sidewalk as my pumps click. I lift my Kate Spade bag higher on my shoulder. I walk up the stairs and to the sign that reads "Nelson and Murdock". I strut right in. I instantly spot Matt, his partner, and his secretary talking.
"Hi. Holly Kiera." I hold out my hand to the partner.
