“So tell the truth. How do you know Alex B,” Asia asked as soon as we walked into cheerleading practice that Monday.
“I don’t know him.”
“So he wasn’t talking about the three of you at that concert,” India challenged, disbelief clear on her face.
“Yes he was,” Isis and Bianca said in unison.
“Well,” the twins said together.
“I don’t...we don’t know him like that. My aunt introduced us backstage before the show started. I didn’t honestly think we made a great impression, but apparently...” I trailed off. “We were just as surprised he said our names as you were and we don’t know why he did it.”
“Okay, that’s enough,” Gisele said, coming to my rescue, which was still surprising in itself. The fact that we were enemies the previous school year wasn’t easily forgotten, but we’d made great strides since then. “Let’s stretch so we can run.”
Gisele and I walked to the front of the squad to lead them through the warm-up, though each girl could probably run through it in their dreams. After stretching on the grass, we all went to the football field to do our two mile run. As usual, Gisele and I were ahead of the pack. “So what did Zay think of that “exquisite” opening,” she teased.
“He thought it was cool like the rest of us.”
“He wasn’t jealous?”
“Of course not,” I huffed. “What could he possibly be jealous about?”
“I don’t know, maybe that am incredibly handsome and famous guy, with a super sexy accent, flirted with his girlfriend in front of thousands of people,” she laughed.
“That was so not flirting. He probably just did it for my aunt’s benefit. And besides, he said Isis and Bianca were beautiful. You aren’t asking her if Chris was jealous.”
“He can’t be. Alex lumped them together; you were singled out,” Gisele countered.
“Oh shut up,” I said in my best Amy Childs impression. We both laughed. “Isaiah is not that insecure,” I said after minutes of silence.
“Yeah I know, and it’s not like you and baby Idris Elba are going to be spending time together anyway. I was just teasing.” She veered off the track and we all followed. Glad the conversation was over and she wouldn’t notice the blush spreading up my face, I grabbed a bottle of water from the cooler.
“Okay ladies, time to go to work,” I said once Gisele joined me.
“Question, did you and Zay break up,” Angel asked. Before I could answer, Sierra asked if I was dating Alex B.
“Girl stop,” Angel answered. “I figure she and Zay broke up and she asked her aunt to get Alex B to say that.”
“Are you trying to be a witch or does it come naturally,” Isis asked before I could register the insult.
“Yeah Angel, if you put half as much thought into your diet, maybe you would still be at the top of the pyramid,” Bianca added. If Angel was the type to blush, she would have been bright red. Glad my girls had my back, but ready to get practice over with, I whistled loudly.
