"Boys, do you know that every time someone's heart breaks, they leave a mark on the world?  This creates fissures, valleys, and even cracks in the pavement."

"Yeah," one boy responds while the other nods.

"Do you want to know the story behind the Grand Canyon?"

         "Yeah," They nodded in unison.

"Well, long, long ago, there was a Shadowhunter. A very smart, handsome, and strong Shadowhunter, but he didn't believe that.. He was a special Shadowhunter. He was a Lightwood. A Lightwood with velvet black hair, and ocean blue eyes. And he loved men, much like Daddy does." The boys listened intently. "He was very, very kind. One day, his sister, his Parabatai, and a mundane girl brought him to a party to help the Mundane. At the party, he met a Warlock. The warlock knew right then and there that he was the one. But the Shadowhunter was in denial. He had spent almost his entire life trying to make everyone else happy. He never really loved anyone. Sure, he loved his sister, but not love like how your Uncle Jace and Aunt Clary love each other. He didn't want to open his heart. He thought emotions were weak, but the Warlock changed that. They both brought down the walls the other had built up, and neither had thought that to be possible. Eventually they began to fall in love, but the Shadowhunter's family didn't like people who liked men, or warlocks for that manner. So, the Shadowhunter proposed to a pretty Shadowhunter girl. When the warlock found out, he was heartbroken, but determined. That was when the Grand Canyon began to grow. On the wedding day, the Warlock showed up just before the runes for marriage were made. The Shadowhunter boy's mom saw the warlock she got angry. Very angry. But the Shadowhunter boy told her to stop, he strode down the aisle to the Warlock and kissed him. In front of everybody. The Clave, the Silent Brothers, and even friends and family." The boys seem to be entranced by the story. "The mother wasn't very happy and the father, well, he was open-minded. The Shadowhunter girl, she wasn't upset. She was so proud of the Shadowhunter boy. He stood up for himself for once, and that started a drastic change in everything. Over time, the Warlock and the Shadowhunter boy grew closer and closer; to a point where the Shadowhunter moved in with the Warlock. To everyone they seemed to be a perfect couple. And they were. Nothing could ever change that. The Shadowhunter boy loved the Warlock with everything he had. As did the Warlock. After they dated for quite a while, the Warlock proposed." He looks down at his ring and plays with it absent mindedly. "The Shadowhunter boy accepted gladly, his eyes lit up- they outshone the moon- and mind you the moon was very bright." The two boys chuckle. "After being engaged for 3 years, they were finally able to get married. The Warlock, he was worried. He wanted the blue to match the color of the Shadowhunter's eyes, but in the end, everything worked out beautifully. The Shadowhunter didn't stop working after their honeymoon, in fact, he started working harder so he would have longer periods at home with his husband. They loved each other very much. Granted, they had their fights, but they always made up, the Shadowhunter boy knew that his pride was nothing to lose a husband for, and the Warlock knew that he wasn't always correct. They adopted two children. One was a Shadowhunter, and another was a warlock. There was a three-year difference between them. The Shadowhunter knew that he was going to be outlived by his husband and one of his sons, and he worried, but the warlock assured him that no matter what, they would enjoy their time together. As time went on, the demon attacks became more and more aggressive. To the Warlock it seemed that everytime the Shadowhunter came home he was almost dead. This worried the Warlock. He wanted to go out there and fight side-by-side with his husband, but the Shadowhunter would remind him that they had two boys that needed to be taken care of. At this the Warlock would sigh softly and agree with the Shadowhunter. One day, the Shadowhunter didn't come home like he normally would. The Warlock called the Shadowhunter and he picked up, assuring him that everything was okay. The Shadowhunter came home a few days later, dirty and tired. As he recovered he didn't take on many missions, wanting to spend time with his husband and kids. They spent every moment together. The Shadowhunter spent a week at home before beginning to take on missions. Neither of them knew that that week, would be the last week they spent together. The last mission the Shadowhunter took on was much, oh so much more, that he had bargained for. It was a Greater Demon. And a strong one at that. The Shadowhunter was hurt beyond repair. He was long gone when help arrived, along with his husband. The Warlock froze, unable to comprehend what he was seeing. His Husband. His lover. His baby. His Shadowhunter. His everything. Was gone. He held the cold, frail body in his arms and let out an inhuman wail. It shook the ground. Everyone on, above, or below the Earth felt it. The ground shook with such violence that the earth began to split, shake, shatter, and crumble. The other Shadowhunter's tried to take the Shadowhunter boy away from the Warlock's grip, only to have the Warlock put up a barrier. He clung onto the Shadowhunter boy's limp body and brushed the hair out of his once beautiful, now lifeless, blue eyes. The Warlock didn't know how long he stayed there, crying, screaming and begging, anything and everything for his Shadowhunter to come back. He didn't know when, but he passed out, exhaustion taking over him. The barrier fell and the Shadowhunters quietly separated the two. They decided that the Warlock needed to be able to see Al- the Shadowhunter boy one last time, so they preserved the body for the Warlock to see at the funeral, before going through with the Shadowhunter funeral ceremony. At the funeral, the Warlock was beyond words, the Shadowhunter boy seemed so peaceful, so serene. He knew the Shadowhunter deserved to rest, but he wondered why so young. The boy was only 35. The following days, the Warlock was a disaster, but his kids were there to help him through it. They were upset too, but they knew that their father was going to need help. And they helped him through it. He loved them for it. In the following 60 years, he lost his Shadowhunter son to old age. His Warlock son, however, travelled around the world. With this, the Warlock was now alone again. Sure, he got postcards from his son, but he felt like something was missing. That was, until, he found two young Warlock boys, abandoned by their parents-"

         "Like us Daddy!"

He chuckles. "Yes, like you guys. Slowly, he began to feel his heart mending, though its mark was forever left on the world. An irreversible scar, a mark that would forever be known as the Grand Canyon."

         "Daddy?"

         "Yes bud?"

        "Were you ever heartbroken?"

"Yes buddy, I have. Wanna know something?" The boys nod their heads vigorously. "That Shadowhunter was Alexander Lightwood, and that Warlock? That was me. Your other daddy would have been Alexander Lightwood-Bane and Magnus Lightwood-Bane. His sister? That was Aunt Isabelle. His Parabatai? That was Uncle Jace. And the mundane girl? That was Aunt Clary. They all left their mark on the world too. You know the Giant's Causeway? That was Uncle Jace's mark. You know the San Andreas Fault? That was Aunt Isabelle's mark. You know the Reed Flute Cave? That was Aunt Clary's mark. Everyone leaves their mark on the world. Alexander left his mark too. His mark was the Fingal's Cave in Scotland. He left that when he realized that he wasn't going to get to see his family again. He loved his family, no matter how bad they had been to him. And I know he would have loved you too."
