It is confusing when you read the story without Angelina's backstory. I guess that was the point at first but I realized reading it over, there were a few parts that made absolutely no sense without a backstory.

Angelina's mom is dead. She didn't die from the earthquake with the bookshelves but she died the same day which was why people thought it was the cause.

The actual cause of her death was when they were driving with Connor London and Angelina. Angelina being lucky got out of both situations with mild amnesia and Connor got a coma for three years.

I believe Agnes was with their dad in all the scenarios which was why she wasn't an important exponent to the story.

Angelina's mom was driving them somewhere and I believe I thought of the backstory as her being stunned from the earthquake which was why she drove by the sea and crashed into another car which resulted killing her an Connor.

Why people thought she died in the earthquake? They couldn't find her body. They searched everywhere but they couldn't find it so people assumed she either died in the earthquake which didn't make sense since the two London's weren't of age to drive.

Wilma's theory of Angelina and her mom being 'murderers' was also a theory of why the mom was never found and resulted to Angelina being blamed.

The story only brings up the events of that day in five chapters and it focuses on why Angelina was sometimes bullied and accused.

It also explains why Angelina hated Jacob.

The second backstory was that they used to be friends but after that day, she lost a few memories of them and resulted to her focusing on negative memories.

I hope this clears things up!
