Nothing too eventful was actually planned for today. I get home after a tiring day at school. I'm partly happy because well, it's Friday, and the other part not really since I have nothing planned.
I know most people go out with their friends or do something fun on Fridays but that isn't the case today. I don't know, I never got around to asking anyone if they wanted to do anything so I'm stuck at home.
Toby and I would usually spend time together on Fridays. Maybe that's why I didn't really plan anything to do. It's just hard to imagine doing anything or going anywhere with anyone who isn't him. It was something I always looked forward to and helped me pull through the week, no matter how sucky it had been. I was just glad to get home and change clothes then see him half an hour later usually waiting outside the door.
Like when we decided to watch a movie for the first time. I opened the door to find an ecstatic Toby greet me with a, "Hey Piper," and a kiss on the cheek.
He opened the door to the backseat of the car where I hopped in first. He came in after as I noticed Riley behind the wheel. John Mayer was playing, something I'd start getting used to after numerous car rides with the brothers over the next few months.
When we got to the cinema, right after Toby got out the door and before I could follow, Riley looked at me through the rear view mirror.
"He really likes you a lot, you know," Riley stated quickly, "Just saying."
I didn't know how to respond so I just shrugged with a confused smile.
After buying our tickets and popcorn, we headed to watch the movie. Halfway through the movie and without my attention, my hand ended up in his. I only noticed it when he squeezed my hand a bit, and well I couldn't concentrate at all after that. All I could think about was how right it felt with him, how we seemed to fit so well that I'd been completely oblivious to it at first.
We left, still holding hands and talking about the movie. When we got out, the car was already outside waiting for us. As we slid into the backseat and put on our seat belts, Riley and Connor, who was sitting in the passenger seat, greeted us, asking how the movie was. We discussed it before Connor asked, "Was it just me or were you two holding hands?"
"Hm?" I responded, combing through memory.
I hadn't been paying attention. Once again, it felt so right that I didn't even mind. I laughed slightly, glancing over at Toby who stopped mid-sentence.
"We uh-" He smiled awkwardly, looking from me to the floor.
"Well, were you?" Riley chimed in.
"Um," Toby said blankly. He started turning a slight shade of pink.
"I guess we were," I substituted for him. I couldn't help but smile. Toby's eyes lifted back to me, and he reached his hand towards mine, intertwining our fingers.
"Aw," Connor began, "don't you think they're the cutest, Ri?"
"Mhm," he responded, turning the corner.
Other times, we'd just spend our Friday nights in one of our houses. A lot of the time, we'd plan to go out but ended up staying in instead.
When we were at the McDonough house, there would be a lot of yelling and so much noise because of all us. Sometimes the guys would let me listen in to some new stuff they were working on, but they never let me listen to too much since I actually am a fan of their music. "Just makes it fair for everyone else," as they always said.
We'd have movie marathons or even play ping pong (which I realized I'm not that bad at). There would be pranks and constant fooling around. It was always crazy when Toby and I were there.
And of course there were regular trips to Starbucks. Riley would drive and most of the time we'd all come along. I'd ask them how many times they'd gone in that day alone, and let me say, it was never just their first.
Sometimes, we wouldn't want to bug his brothers or vice versa which resulted in the many times he'd come over to my house. It really depended on the circumstances. We'd watch Spongebob, and he'd tell me about the new song they were writing or an embarrassing story from when he was a kid. There were also times we'd try cooking something and inevitably end up ordering pizza or whatever. There was always something different and fun even if we usually did the same stuff.
Fridays just aren't gonna be as good anymore. Speaking of Fridays, the last time I'd looked through the box, I noticed an envelope that said something about Friday. I go through it again and pull it out when I find it.
On a Friday.
Dear Piper,
It's Friday. You obviously know that if you opened this. Whatever time it is, I hope it's going well. Sorry I couldn't be there to pick you up or crash at your place like we always do. I wish I could sit with you on the floor and lean against the couch while eating half burnt popcorn, or stay at my house and hide all the capos and picks from Connor, or even just spend some time together in the mall. But hey, just because I'm gone doesn't mean that should stop you from doing anything. You're probably at home reminiscing or something and that's why you went through the box. You're the type of girl to stop for awhile and just think about every little detail and try to relive it in your head. Am I right? Of course I am.
But really, call someone up, go to your friend's house, anything. Enjoy yourself and have fun with your friends. Do something for the rest of the day, and I promise to take you out and even pay for dinner the Friday after we get back ok?
-Toby
I put the letter on the table, fishing out my phone from my pocket. I text Rena and ask her if she wants to hang out. She replies within a minute. I guess I do have plans for today.
