Bloodlust

That night as I tossed and turned in bed, trying to think of an explanation for the thing that I had witnessed and the bad news, I heard a soft whisper just below my balcony.

Peering down into the mild darkness, I recognized Judith. Climbed down the fire exit, I came to her.

She pushed me away roughly. Her lank form seemed starving.

"Judy?"

"Why aren't you wearing your cloak?"

That was another unexpected question. Before I could reply she gave a hollow laugh, "It helps me to control myself better. Now I am more dangerous than you can imagine."

She moved a step forward but I rushed up to embrace her. I was so happy to get her back.
She screamed and pushed me away and as I fell to the ground I heard a feral cry. I looked back and saw the glint of darkness in her eyes. I had only one explanation for that expression...Predator and prey.

The lust was clear in her eyes but suddenly to my horror, she sank her teeth into her own wrist, pierced her veins, drinking her own blood. A chill ran down my spine. My scientific mind refused to believe what I was seeing before me.

Finally she stopped, wiped her lips and said, "You know, I turned. I am a creature of shadows now and you can't help me. I was bitten by one of my distant relatives, one I hardly knew. Who knew it was my destiny?"

With these words she turned around and disappeared into the night.
