MATTHEW WAS UNHAPPY, TO SAY THE LEAST.
It wasn't only because he'd caught a cold during their comeback, nor was it solely due to the homesickness that came to him in waves every once in a while. No, this could be credited to his once-loving-but-lately-distant girlfriend, who used to give him hugs and sneak in kisses at every opportunity, but only looked at him-- like, what? Twice?-- in the past week.
Okay, that's an exaggeration. But Matthew was an affectionate person, and Somin's distance was a stab to his heart.
Does she not love me anymore?
Matthew didn't know.
So he did what he always did in tight situations where he needed advice: he went on a walk and called his best friend from the United States.
"Hey, man, sorry to have bothered you this late," Matthew greeted apologetically.
"No, no, you're fine, just give me a sec." His best friend yawned on the other end. Matthew heard shuffling-- he's probably getting up for some coffee-- his thoughts proven correct as he heard the familiar sound of a fridge opening, of a bottlecap being twisted off, of his friend taking a long sip of the refrigerated coffee. His friend cleared his throat, then responded. "What's up?"
"Everything? Nothing? I..." Matthew's voice trailed off in a sigh, then continued. "I don't know man, I just need someone to talk to."
A pause. Then, "I know you didn't just call me at 2 in the goddamn morning to say hey. What's wrong?"
Matthew was silent. "Is it the industry? Are they tryna give you shit? Because I'll haul ass over there to fight them, you know I would--"
"No, no!" Matthew laughed. "Don't fight my job."
"What, you think I'll lose?"
"You sure as hell won't win."
"You right," his friend agreed. "Is it Korea?"
Matthew sighed. "Partly. I mean, I'm not tryna be a little bitch or anything, because I'm literally famous around the world, but I get a bit homesick sometimes, ya know? Cali's my home. Sometimes I just...I just wanna go back."
"Woah, woah, woah. You mean for good? Or just for a visit?"
"For a visit, but a longer one? Like a couple months? But even if I was able to go for a week, I'd be happy."
"Look, man, I miss you too. But you can't leave SK right now. You still have promotions, yeah?"
"Yeah, but those should only last a month..." Matthew's voice trailed off hopefully.
"But you're still going to have to get approval from your job, which is gonna be hard. Not to mention..."
"What?"
"What about your girlfriend?"
Matthew sighed. "Somin...I don't even know if she'd care."
"Her boyfriend is leaving the goddamned country, why the hell wouldn't she care?"
"Somin and I-- you know how we were all that, I told you. But lately...she's been acting a little strange."
A pause. "Define strange."
