Chapter 4
"Hey" Ben said cooly as if he invaded a stranger's personal space all the time.
I cautiously took a step back and did an awkward wave. "Uh, hi?!" It came out more as a question than as a statement.
"What are you looking for?" Ben asked but I could tell his mind was somewhere else. He kept on glancing toward a locked door in the corner.
"Harry." I said not knowing if that was what i was really looking for. "Mr. Styles is residing in his quarters." Ben said. I waited for him to start laughing and say that he was kidding and that he was in his room. That didn't happen though.
"He's in his room?" I asked, raising my eyebrows. "Informally, yes!" Ben said not even cracking a teeny but of a smile. I wanted to throw my hands up in the air and scream ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? But instead I just stood there and awkwardly walked past Ben. He watched me as I walked like he wanted to tell me something but decided not to.
After the embarrassment with Ben, I decided to ask Elizabeth where Harry's "quarters" were. She pointed down the hallway and I cautiously walked towards the door at the end of the hall.
I stopped short outside of the door when I heard Harry screaming at someone. As far as I knew, no one other than me, Harry, Elizabeth and Ben were In the mansion so I figured he was on the phone.
"HOW IN THE WORLD did you escape???" Harry screamed. There was another soft voice saying something about being bored. "Well you better get back where you belong before I minimize your food supply!!" Harry screamed at the person and stormed out the door.
I quickly hid behind a huge potted plant as Harry stomped down the hall.
I didn't know what to do so after Harry left, I just strolled down the hall as if nothing happened. All of a sudden I heard a voice.
"Lindsey?" A voice said that was obviously Harry's. I spun around. He was nowhere to be seen. "Time for dinner!" Harry said. Then I realized it was just an intercom. I pressed down the button and said, "Um, where is the dining room?" I kinda laughed.
"First level in the middle," and the intercom crackled and then there was silence.
To most people this seems like a hard task to find a dining room in a huge house but when Harry said the middle, he meant it. I just started walking towards the middle of the house, and there was a large set of double glass doors.
I pushed them open to find a grand ballroom complete with crystal chandeliers, luxurious drapes, and mahogany tables. To the right was a long buffet table with foods I've never seen. In the middle, about 20 round tables were filled with people. To the left were huge windows with the view of the front of the mansion, now crowded with Cadillacs, Audis and BMWs.
Harry was standing socializing in the corner with some people I didn't recognize. When he saw me he motioned for me to come over. I awkwardly waddled over and stood next to Harry.
Compared to them, I looked like a hobo. And by them I mean the people Harry was talking to. There was a lady in her 30s and a man and a woman who looked to be about 60. There were wearing long gowns and the man was wearing a suit.
"This is my adopted daughter, Lindsey!" Harry said to the people. I almost had a heart attack when he said "daughter." I definitely didn't think about it that way but that is what I am. The man and woman smiled and the lady looked annoyed.
"We're Harry's neighbors!" The man said. Neighbors??? "We live to miles to the left." The woman said probably noticing I was confused. I just nodded awkwardly.
Elizabeth rushed up to me and then rushed me up to my room to "fix me up" as she put it. I was still curious how Harry seemed so happy in the dining room but so angry a few minutes ago in the hallway.
Elizabeth handed me a silver chiffon dress with a sequined top. I put it on as she rushed about, trying to fix my hair. She clipped on a huge diamond necklace around my neck and piled my hair up on my hair in a curly updo. Elizabeth shoved sparkly pumps on my feet, dusted my face with makeup and then pushed me out the door.
I immediately fell over because I had never walked in heels before. I wobbled down the stairs and found my way to the dining room. I practiced walking around in heels, up and down the hall, just to be sure.
I was doing pretty good until I tripped and fell into a mirror which was knocked onto the floor. I heard someone snicker and I whipped around.
Out of the corner of my eye I saw blonde hair and a bright smile. Ben had been watching me the whole time!
I suddenly became embarrassed and turned away. Ben came up behind me and picked up the mirror silently.
"Sorry for laughing at you," he said "I have never seen anyone so had in heels before!" He burst out laughing again. My jaw dropped. I thought he would say something nice but Snead he just laughed.
I walked away and opened the dining room's doors, trying to forget about Ben.
