"The sky isn't the limit. It's just the view."
Anushka
Cabin Crew, Consolidated Airways, Flight CA 747 report to briefing room 6.
The hustle and bustle of the Dubai International Airport reached my ears and amongst the loud noise, arrived the announcement for us.
This feeling of hearing the noise, tried to sooth my feeling of grief. A feeling that not every person could relate to.
And how could I explain this feeling to the people around me? It was not expected of me to look gloomy, what is expected of me is to look like I have everything I have ever wished for in my life. And I do. I may not be rich as other women and I may have just been separated from the love of my life but I have a life that a lot of people wish for and yet I am unhappy.
I certainly could not look unhappy, for being a flight attendant required you to always have a smile on your face. I finished the final touches and brushed my hair one last time.
I looked at the other crew ready to enter the briefing room. My fellow flight attendants walked ahead of me. I did not even know half of them considering it was a different crew yet again with a new schedule. We walked with poised; elegant steps and stood inside the briefing room.
Captain Herald was already present there along with our purser where as First Officer Ali and the other officer Aman, were stood on the other end. Captain Herald was the pilot in charge to our flight to New York last month, so I was familiar with him.
"Good morning, Captain." I greeted him politely as he glanced my way.
"Morning, Anushka. I didn't know you had a flight today, I saw you here yesterday as well." He responded and I smiled.
"It was only a four hour flight, Captain. Today's my first layover of the month." I told him.
"Well, good luck to you, my darling! Have fun!" Captain Herald exclaimed joyfully and as a result, I furrowed my eyebrows.
Why was he talking like he was not the one flying us today?
Before I could ask him anything, Captain Herald moved away and walked out of the door. This left us with the purser, Brenda, another purser Sarah; a few other crew members in charge and the first officer.
"Why don't you girls get your nails and clothes checked while we wait for the captain?" Brenda advised and we nodded, getting in line.
Our flight crew had to always look prim and proper, leaving no room for mistakes. There was no 'Oh, my hair is undone because my hairspray finished!' or 'I've run out of peach lipstick', none of that was permitted. Grooming standards in our airline was extremely high and crew members were expected to look their best at all times.
"Anushka, your shoes!" Brenda yelled in a slightly annoyed tone, as I noticed that my shoes were rather mucky and dusty.
"I had polished them, Brenda. I promise." I uttered apologetically as she scoffed and stared at me with utter disappointment.
It was not my fault Dubai was so dusty.
I rolled my eyes internally, and then sat at the corner; wiping the sandy substance off of my now jet black heels.
I was still busy wiping them when the door opened. The other flight attendant, with blonde hair who had just gotten scolded for unblended makeup, sat beside me and let out a long; dreamy sigh.
"You have got to see our Captain, Anushka." She squealed, making me laugh.
Her accent reminded me of Bradford and I could tell she was British just from that. She had been on a flight to Paris with me two weeks ago. She was a bubbly person but had a loud mouth and just wouldn't shut up.
