Heels clicking, keys jingling, I gripped my bag tightly. I've never been late to work before, especially with the attitude that my boss portrays. Water splashed up on my pants as I strutted through the puddles of Manhattan. I walked into the main foyer of the the building and handed the secretaries my trench coat.
"Nice of you to arrive, Miss.Kennedy" One smiled as she handed me some letters and a sticky note full of people who had called for me. I sighed and walked to the staircase. I stood at the door, trying to mentally prepare for what was to come. I took a deep breath and climbed up the stairs. As I opened the door I saw everyone hard at work and, as usual, no Adam. I let out a breath of relief as I placed my bag on my desk and took a seat. I filed through all the letters and returned all the calls. It turns out that Adam has two meetings to attend and it was my job to fill him in. I stood up and walked over to his private office. I shakily lifted my fist to the door.
"Come in." Before I could knock he allowed me to enter. I gulped and slowly opened the door.
"Sir, you have two meetings next week to attend. One is for stocks and one is purely just for getting to know everyone in the business." I gulped as I stood in the door way. He took his eyes away from his computer and looked me up and down. He narrowed his eyes at me and returned his focus to his computer. I slowly grabbed the door knob and pulled the door.
"I didn't say to leave." He uttered before I could shut the door. I sighed and pushed the door back open.
"Come, sit." He pointed to the chair in front of his desk without breaking eye contact from his computer. I nodded, shut the door quietly and took a seat in the chair. Ten minutes of just staring at him attend business on his electronics had gone by before he had even looked at me.
"Miss.Kennedy." He folded his hands on his desk as he leaned in.
"Mr.Driver." I pressed my thighs together.
"You were late today. Care to explain why?" He leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms. I bit my lip.
"I.. I wasn't even that late." I shook my head.
"My car broke down, so I had to run." I looked down and fiddled with my thumbs.
"Look at me." I heard his chair creek. I slowly lifted my head up.
"Don't let it happen again." He guided a hand through his dark brown hair. I bit my lip once more and nodded. I stood up and began walking out of his office.
"Miss.Kennedy." He stopped me. I turned around and tilted my head.
"Let me take you out for lunch." He said pointing to the clock. I looked at the clock and it read 1:30 PM. I sighed and nodded. He stood up and wrapped his blazer around him, quickly buttoning it and walking up to me.
"Shall we?" He opened the door and placed a hand on my back. I nodded and walked out of the office to the stairs with him following behind me. As we walked down the stairs I listened to the clicking of our shoes.
"Why me?" I questioned, not looking back, as I opened the door for him. He walked out and headed straight to his car. I got in the passenger side and stared at him.
"Do you like tea?" He turned to me. I nodded. He smirked and put his keys in the ignition. I looked out the window as we drove around town. Manhattan was beautiful in the rain. I turned and looked at the clock.
"Sir, we've been driving around for an hour. Work is practically over." I began to shake.
"Relax. I'm your boss." He smirked as he parked his car outside of a tea shop. I quickly got out and ran inside, while Adam took a call in the car. I began to wonder around the shop. There were tea kettles and tea cups on display everywhere. There were even boxes of tea. The bell above the door rang, catching my attention. I turned to meet eyes with Adam.
"This is lovely." I smiled. He smiled at me and raised a hand to my cheek but quickly pulled it away.
"Come with me." He took my hand and pulled me to a table. Someone walked over and placed a hot kettle on our table and two cups. Adam poured me and himself a cup.
"So, why?" I asked once again.
"Running in the rain could make you sick." He smirked as he sipped his tea. He placed the cup on the table. He gestured to my cup. I slowly lifted it and sipped the tea as well."This is amazing." I laughed as I put the cup down.
"Welcome to Ciao Tea." He intertwined his hands.
"So, why are you always isolated. Locked away in your office?" I tilted my head.
"Do you like romance?" He tilted his head. My eyes widened.
"It's.. It's nice. I don't like to be suffocated." I stuttered.
"Dates here and there are nice, but I prefer to spend time at home with my loved one." I explained. He slowly nodded.
"I must go." He stood up and placed money on the table.
"Wait." I grabbed his wrist. He whipped his arm out of my grasp and stared at me. I slowly stood up.
"I'm.. I'm sorry. I..." I looked down.
"I'll take you home." He replied as he walked out.
