I winced a little as the earpiece dug into my ear.
"What is this?" I hissed under my breath, even as I watched the glass doors revolve in front of my eyes.
Chao's voice crackled in my ear. "A test and a scoping mission. Find our man."
I glanced at the silver timepiece on my wrist. It was a little past ten. I'd been waken up by Chao at six in the morning, rather unceremoniously too, I might add - he dug his big toe into my side and kicked off my blankets - before being hauled into a nondescript white van that drove at forty miles per hour down the North-South highway. We'd stopped by a petrol station, refilled and grabbed some breakfast, before driving off again. Just when I had been about to doze off, Chao slowed down and stopped the van in front of a donut shop. Handing me an earpiece, he'd told me to put it on and get out.
Half asleep and completely bewildered at what was going on, I'd obeyed, feeling more than hearing the van doors slam behind me as I stepped onto the pavement. Through the earpiece, Chao had instructed me to walk straight and take the second left turning, before turning left again at the first 7-11. I'd followed his commands to the letter, and now here I was, in front of what looked to be a very luxurious condominium.
I watched the security guard that stood near the elevators, behind the glass doors. "How the heck am I supposed to get in?"
"You're the spy. Think," came Chao's answer.
I groaned, frustrated. Throwing glances both ways down the busy road, I crossed to the other side.
Hwayoung Apartments.
The name seemed vaguely familiar. I pushed through the revolving doors, and that was when Chao said,
"Try to find the gym. He's probably there."
Who's probably there?
The security guard was already walking near. Aw biscuits.
"Can I help you, miss?" His voice was thick with an accent I couldn't recognize.
"Uh yes, I was looking for the gym?"
"Are you a resident of this apartment?"
I paused. "No, actually. I was just looking for a friend. He told me he would be at the gym."
"Do you know his name, miss? Or room number?"
I made a big show of waving my hand around in a gesture of dismissal. "Oh you don't have to call him out here! That'd be bothersome, and anyway he gets pretty intense when he's doing his workouts. I'll just go find him myself . . . if you can kindly point me towards the direction of the gym . . .?"
The guard offered a tolerant smile. "I'm sorry, but I'm afraid this is our standard policy. You must give a valid name for us to let you in. It is for the safety of our residents, you understand."
Well shit. "Of - of course."
Chao's voice came again, unperturbed and light. "Better act fast, kid."
"I'm not a kid," I growled under my breath.
"I'm sorry?" A look of suspicion entered the guard's eyes, and his hand drifted to his baton. At least he didn't reach for his gun.
Scoping mission . . . It had to be something to do with the seven profiles then, the ones I'd been tasked to memorize. But which?
"Miss, if you can't give a name I'm afraid I'll have to - "
"Jeon Jungkook!" I blurted out, as I suddenly remembered. Gym. Of course. The star athlete.
The guard's hand relaxed. "Ah, a friend of Master Jeon? You'll find him in the gym, like you said."
