Soul mate. In this world, when you turn eighteen, you will stop aging until you find your soul mate and grow old with them together. You are meant to meet them, fall in love, have kids, and die together.

How do you know your soul mate? How do you find him/her? I don't know. No one knows exactly. But people say that a moment will come and you will just know that that person is meant for you. They say you're gonna see sparks and hear your heart pumping from your chest louder than ever. The world around you will slow down. And all you can see is that person. Like magic -people say. But that doesn't always work. Not for my mom.

When she met my dad, they thought they were soul mates. They madly fell in love and then I came into the world. But as the years go by, when I turned five, they noticed that both of them didn't age. Not a wrinkle or a gray hair in sight. No sign of aging.

The general rule is that you meet the one for you, you marry them, and you live happily ever after. But my parents were wrong. On my fifth birthday, we were in the park, eating ice cream. The vendor asked my parents if I was their child. They said yes, of course. The vendor asked my age. My parents said five. The vendor said that they looked too young to have a five year old.

Both of them did not talk to each other until we got home. They went to their room and I went to mine. But I could still hear my mother crying. Two years later, my dad left us. He found his true soul mate; not my mom; but a girl from work. They stayed together. They didn't have any kids, unfortunately but they're happy. My dad looked thirty now. This means he is aging and he made the right decision of leaving us for his true soul mate. Where is my mom's soul mate? No one knows. Maybe he is also looking for mom. I guess they will keep searching until they find one another.

I'm turning eighteen now. September 5, Friday, 12 p.m. to be exact. And I'm excited and scared. It's already 5 a.m. Two hours before school, seven hours from meeting him -the love of my life. I didn't sleep. How could I? I got up from bed, got ready for school and ate cereal. My mom was still asleep. I told her that I don't want any celebration and that we should go out tomorrow at the park and have some picnic. I got out of the house and knocked next door. Gab, my neighbor for eleven years, classmate and only friend, opened the door, hugged me and shouted.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY ZOE!!!!!"

"Keep it down, would you? I told you I don't want others to know." I whispered as I struggled out of the hug. It's only six in the morning and I also don't want any other person to know it's my birthday.

"Whatever, let's go." he said as we went to his car. I followed him and we are headed for school. Gab is turning eighteen tomorrow. September 6, 12 a.m.. He's not what you think he is. He is certainly neither my soul mate nor my boyfriend. He has a girlfriend, Sabrina, and she's cool with Gab having a girl best friend. I like her.

"Excited?" he asked me with a grin.

"More of like scared. Let's not talk about it." I said, l looking through the window.

"As you wish, birthday girl. By the way have you heard of the transfer student? They said he's really hot and it's his first day today."

"Of course I've heard of the transfer student. The girls talked about it in the restroom all week." I said, rolling my eyes.

The classes are cut half day because of a seminar for the teachers. We are allowed to go home after lunch. At lunch, 11 a.m. Gab and I ate sandwiches. At 11:50, I went to my locker at the main building. Gab went to the faculty to pass a project. I arrived at my locker at 11:58. When opened it, at least 10 books came tumbling down in to the middle of the hallway.
