Nightmares
Chapter 9
Dean pulls his car up in the driveway, if you can call it that. It is just after 10 pm. I looked at Dean. He had hardly said a word to me the whole trip. He shakes his head and ducked out the car. I look back to Zaviana. She is staring absently out the window. I decide not to disturb her. Instead, I sigh and get out the car. I reach over and pull the lever on the seat, pushing it forwards.
“Come on.” I say. “Zai?”
“Huh?” She asks, looking at me. She looks around a little confused, as if she didn’t reaise it had grown dark.
“Come on.” I say again. I walk towards the bunker. There are windows jutting from the ground, the roof looks like a mound of dirt. A small staircase leads to a big door, but besides that, it would be nearly impossible to know the bunker was there. I hear the Impala door shut with a solid thud and tentative footsteps as Zaviana walks bare-foot along the gravel. We need to get her some clothes and shoes.
I follow Dean into the bunker.
Kevin sits at the table in the study. Dean heads straight for the refrigerator. He grabs a beer from the door and walks to the study, dropping into the armchair that he placed in the corner. Kevin looks at him curiously.
“Hey Kevin.” I say as I go to sit in one of the study chairs.
“Hey.” He says slowly. “What are you two fighting about?”
“We’re not fighting.” I say, looking at Dean, hoping that he will pick up the bait and talk to me for the first time since Bobby’s.
The bunker door opens again. Kevin eyes us both to see if he should be scared. Dean raises his beer and swings his legs over the arm of the couch, still on his silent protest.
Kevin looks past me as Zaviana walks down the hall. He nearly falls out of his chair when he sees her.
“Zai, meet Kevin.” I introduce, pointing to each of them in turn. “Kevin, this is Zaviana.”
“It’s Zai.” She says, a hint of annoyance in her voice. “Hi.”
“Hi.” Kevin squeaks, his olive skin turning red. Zai stands awkwardly, shuffling her bare feet. I look at Dean, silently begging him to get over his pride.
“Alright.” He says. “I’ll show you your room.” Zai smiles at him. Dean ignores it and leads her down the hall, no doubt giving her an intimidating tour full of ‘don’t go here’ s and ‘don’t touch this’ s.
I look back at Kevin. His slanted eyes are wide and his black hair looks like it hasn’t been brushed for a couple of days.
“A girl?” He whispers harshly. “You brought a girl here? And you didn’t tell me?”
I try not to laugh. “Remind me. When was the last time you dated a girl?”
“Hey!” He says defensively, “I’ve been helping you two. Been saving the world, it’s about time that I get some girls.”
“It doesn’t work like that, buddy.” I say. “Besides, she’s –”
“Broken?” He offers.
“Got a lot on her plate. Her family just died and she was nearly killed, what was it, three, four times?”
“Sounds like she’ll be a regular hinter.” Kevin mumbles.
“What?” I ask defensively.
“Nothing, it just seems like everyone I meet now days are either demons, or have been possessed by one.”
“What about Charlie?” I ask, thinking of the red read that is just like a sister to Dean and I.
“I’ve never met her, Sam.”
“Well,” I say, “It’s not like we choose this life –”
“The life chooses us.” Kevin finishes. “Yeah, I know. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for freakin’ life choosing me.”
“I’m sorry, Kevin.” I say.
“It’s not your fault.” He says, turning back to his note book.
“You should go to bed soon.” I glance up at the clock on the wall as I turn to leave.
“I will.” He promises.

“Psst.” I hear someone hiss at me. I refuse to open my eyes and roll over instead. “Psst. Sammy!”
I shove the pillow over my ears.
“Yoo-hoo, Sammy…” The pest continues to bug me and I try to block it out.
“SAM!” The ferocity of the voice snaps me from my dream state.
“WHAT?” I shout, sitting up.
“Temper, temper.” Lucifer chides. “Don’t want to raise your blood pressure too high now, do we?”
“What do you want?” I ask.
“I’m bored.” He complains. “Do something with me.”
“What? No.”
“Ple-ea-se?” He begs. I close my eyes again and try to find a place where I can block out the devil.
Suddenly, I hear something like a gun fire next to me. I grab at the gun I have under my pillow. I look around for the assailant, but there is only Lucifer sitting on my desk chair.
“Cherry bombs.” He smiles, juggling one in his hand. “These are fun.”
“Please don’t.” I say.
“But I’m bo-o-o-red!”
“Screw yourself.”
“Tried that. Wasn’t all that great.”
“Look, just leave me alone.”
“Oh, I’m hurt Sammy.” He mocks. I roll my eyes and press a second pillow over my ears. Despite the feathery stuffing, I can still hear Lucifer babbling on. “After all we’ve been through. Hell, the mental hospital. The cage again for me. And now this? Only to be ignored, oh how tragic a life!”
“Shut up!” I demand.
“Sammy?” I hear someone tap on the door. I know it’s Dean.
“Crap, go away.” I whisper to Lucifer. He laughs.
I hear Dean open the door.
“Sammy,” He says again. “Is everything alright?”
“Suck it.” I mumble, pretending to be asleep.
“Wow.” Lucifer laughs again.
“Stupid vamp.”
“Oh, it’s vampires tonight? Rerun. Be careful Sam,” The devil warns, changing his voice as if he was talking to a baby. “Or big brother Dean-ie wean-ie’s going to notice. Then he’s either going to kill you, or make you get help again, yes he is, yes he is.”
“Go away.” I say, hoping to sound like I am still sleep talking, but wanted both Dean and Lucifer to get the point.
Dean sighs and closes the door.
“Sleep talking?” Satan asks. “You’re going to hear about this.”
“No I’m not.” I say. He doesn’t say anything and I close my eyes again.
“She’s bad, you know.” He says after a while.
“What?” I mumble, half asleep.
“Zaviana. She’s a bad egg.”
“She’s not an egg, she’s a person.”
“Are you sure about that?”
I don’t say anything.
“Sam. Sam. Sam. Sammy. Sam. Sam. Don’t make me throw another cherry bomb. Sam. Sammy. Sam.”
“WHAT?” I whisper harshly.
“I’m telling you this for your own good.”
“You’re IN MY HEAD.” I say, maybe a little too loudly. “You can’t possibly know anything about her.”
“Sure I do. Her name is Zaviana Jane Geller. She was born the fourteenth of January under ‘miraculous’ circumstances. Her mother and father were high school sweethearts. Her sister, Grace Rosalynn, was a miracle in herself, but we all know why that is, don’t we?”
“No.” I say slowly, the realisation sinking in.
“Ah, but yes. She made a deal for a child.”
“You’re lying.”
“I’ve never lied to you.”
“You sort of have.” I say, thinking back to when he tricked me into believing that he was Dean.
“That was one time! And it wasn’t really a lie.”
“There’s no way that’s true!”
“Ask he yourself.”
“I will.” I accept the bait. “Tomorrow.”
“You know what I find fun?” Lucifer asks. I ignore him, but he still continues. “Telling stories. You know, slumber party style.”
A couple of seconds pass without him speaking. Suddenly, a cherry bomb goes off.
“Pay attention, Sam! There’s going to be a quiz on this! Did I ever tell you about the time my brothers threw me out of heaven?”
I press the pillow harder over my ears. This is going to be a long night.
