Emma looked around for any island in the empty sea around her until she came across one enveloped in orange flames. She steered towards it , landing in the soft sand. "Gods dang it Lucas! I kept you here to prevent you from destroying anything!"
Lucas glanced up at her, furious. His sword materialized, pointing the glowing blade at her. "You left me here to die!"
"No, I left you here so you wouldn't burn down all of Manhattan!"
Lucas gripped is sword handle, his knuckles turning white. "Liar,"
"What? How am I lying? If anything, I'm telling the truth. You gotta believe me..." She said observing Lucas' anger.
"You're just like them," he said, his eyes burning. "You're just like them! Saying you care because you're scared! Lucas' voice slowly broke as the words spilled out.
Emma hesitated to respond, "Lucas I'm scared because...I love you, okay? I just never thought-" she was cut off.
"Stop it," he muttered. "Stop lying to me. Stop telling me you care," he began, stepping back. He tried to holding in the tears but struggled, "No one does, they didn't then and they don't now,"
Emma walked up to him with caution, "How do you not see that I care? I cried a week straight when you were left in the underworld. I tried to convince my dad to not smash you into a million pieces!"
"Stop," he muttered again. Lucas suppressed the tears with difficulty. He didn't want to look weak, "You're just like them-"
"Who? Just like who? Tell me! I'd be pleased to know!" she said also starting to tear up, seeing the hatred in his eyes.
"He told me he cared," he ranted on. His breathing was getting heavy. HIs arm growing weak from holding the sword.
"Who told you they cared? Who did you not trust? You gotta tell me something, Lucas"
"He was right!" Lucas yelled, a waved of anger washing over his. The flames grew stronger. "Nothing changed!"
"I-I don't know what you're talking about! Stop getting mad at me."
Before he knew it tears where trickling down Lucas' face. "I promised-" he spoke quietly, his voice cracking. His knees buckled and he dropped his sword. Lucas covered his face, kneeling down, "I promised-" He kept repeating over and over.
Emma knelt by his side. "Promised who? What promise? You're making no sense right now,"
"Annabeth...and Thalia-" Lucas kept rambling on. He was exhausted. All he wanted was to get off the island and sleep. But even then he couldn't get rest.
"What did you promise them? C'mon tell me..."
Lucas smiled a bit but it was a melancholy smile. "I wouldn't-" he said slowly. "I wouldn't let anything hurt them-"
"You can change, Lucas. You can stop all this. I believe in you." she said, running her fingers through his dark, curly hair.
