Sixteen months after the ending of Isla and the Happily Ever After.
Anna and Étienne
He leaned over to me and our lips touched softly, both of us smiling. I pushed away and pressed his mobile lightly into his hand, "Tell him!"
He nodded and took the phone from my hands. Dialling, he turned away from me, still smiling. I turned back to the envelopes. I could barely count them there were so many, but I knew exactly how many there were, 30. Just enough, but not too many. I smiled as Étienne turned back to me mouthing, "It's ringing!"Isla and Josh
I had just flopped down on our thrift store, dark evergreen couch after a long day of classes with a huge textbook resting on my lap, when Josh's phone buzzed on the coffee table beside me. I picked it up and smiled at the name on the screen. "Hi St. Clair, how are you?"
"Oh, hey Isla? I'm good, really good, thanks. You?
"Fine, just, you know, school." He sighed which told me he felt the same way, but there was a difference in his voice than mine. He had news, I could tell. "Did you want to talk to Josh?" I asked, wondering why he'd called.
"Yes, that would be great. Thanks."
"Okay, hold on. He's in his studio, I'll go get him."
As my feet padded down our apartment hall, passing first our bathroom and then our bedroom, I stopped at the last door on the left and turned. He was hunched over working on his latest assignment no doubt. This, aside our bedroom, was my favourite room in the apartment. He'd decorated the walls with frames upon frames of art. Mostly of me, not to brag. He also had drawings of St. Clair and Anna, Meredith, his parents and my sisters. My favourite was of one he'd drawn of Hattie and I over a year ago. It was our last day together before she'd return to SOAP again and I'd move in with Josh. He'd accompanied us on a picnic in Central Park. We'd sat on an old, rugged blanket of mine while he drew us stuffing our faces with raspberries and cookies and tarts. We'd laughed the whole time and every time I glanced over at him, a smile was dancing on his face. We'd all had an amazing day.
I knocked on the door, breaking him from him work. He looked up, dazed and spotted me standing in the doorway. Every time he looks at me, I melt and he does the same. We were both doing it then, when St. Clair's voice rang through the silence, "Isla, are still there?"
I jerked away and put my attention back to the phone, raising it to my ear. Josh tilted his head in confusion. "Sorry St. Clair, he's right here." Josh took it eagerly. St. Clair hardly calls so this was a happy surprise for him. I sat down on a bench Josh keeps by the door and listened to the conversation.
"St. Clair! What's up?"
Silence. Josh nodded.
"That's great!"
More silence.
"I'll tell Isla to mark it down right after this."
He looked up to me, smiling. It faded as St. Clair talked. Minutes pass and I watch Josh's expression. It shifted from confusion to understanding to hesitation and a range of emotions in between. Then suddenly, one if the biggest smiles I've seen spread across his face. I smiled along with him, but he wasn't looking at me anymore. Josh was nodding with great excitement, "Yes! Of course! Gosh, St. Clair, thank you!"
More silence and then, if, possible, Josh's smile got bigger.
"Man, I love you too!"
Then I started to cry, I couldn't help it. I've never heard Josh say that to St. Clair. Whatever was happening on the other end must be something amazing.
"Hold on," Josh said, "Let me tell Isla." He looked up at me and seeing tears added, "You won't believe this, she doesn't even know yet and she's in tears!" He laughed and I joined him, wiping off the droplets running down my cheeks. He set down the phone and stood up to reach me. I stood to meet him. He wiped away the flood of tears steaming down my face. "Isla, calm down, calm down." I just nodded my head, smiling at him. He guided us down to the bench and held my hands tight. I took slow deep breaths and he began, "The reason St. Clair called is because, " He paused briefly, "He asked me to be his best man." I burst into tears all over again. We're both smiling. Josh holds out one finger and grabs the phone. He began to talk excitedly again with St. Clair. I popped out of the studio briefly to hunt down some tissues. When I returned, Josh's grin was still plastered to his face. He was laughing and smiling. I know how much he misses St. Clair, so it must have been so great for him to talk with him again.
Josh looked up and noticed me. His face got serious while St. Clair talked on the other end. He smiled again, then handed the phone over to me. I gave him a confused look, but he just smiled.
When I put the phone to my ear I didn't hear the voice I expected, "Isla, how are you?" It's Anna. I could tell she was also crying on the other end. It must be an amazing, but emotional time for them, with getting ready for the wedding. "Hey, I'm great, so great. How are you?"
"Amazing. Hey, I have something to ask you."
"Okay, sure."
"Um, do you think you could mange to agree on a dress for four?"
"What are you taking about? Four?"
"Well, you are always wearing dresses and I didn't know if you'd be able to decide on a dress for four because I want you to be my bridesmaid!" My tears were back and back to stay. I was smiling and nodding, but I couldn't get out any words. Josh took the phone from me and answered, "Yes, she says yes. She's crying too much to speak, but it's a definite yes." He looked over at me in confirmation and I nodded.
Josh said his goodbyes to Anna and St. Clair, promising to call back very soon. When he set the phone down. We rushed to each other and embraced. I whispered in his ear, "You've got a wedding to plan!" I could feel his smile spreading across his face.Lola and Cricket:
"Oh my word! Yes! Yes of course! Oh! Do you have a dress? I have tons of ideas! Anna, this I going to be so much fun! When can you come over? Cricket and I are meeting up with Calliope this weekend, but maybe the next weekend we could get together? What do you think?"
Anna just giggled on the other line. She'd just asked me if I would be her bridesmaid for her and St. Clair's wedding. I was over the moon for those two when they got engaged. I'm so happy to be part of their wedding too!
"I would love for you to design my dress Lola! We should definitely get together sometime soon." I agreed and we chatted excitedly for several more minutes about styles and frill and lace. I could barley contain my excitement! We ended up saying goodbye because Anna said she and St. Clair had a meeting with their wedding planner. They have a wedding planner! I couldn't believe it! They sound so grown up and mature! I guess they are!
After we'd hung up I immediately dialled Cricket's number.
"I have the best news!" I almost shouted into the phone. At the same moment, Cricket's voice cried the same thing back to me.
"Wait, what?" I asked.
"You have news too?"
"Yeah, what's your news?"
"No, no, what's your news. You go first!"
"Anna asked me to be her bridesmaid!"
"No way! That's awesome Lola! That's funny because I just got a call from St. Clair and he asked me if-"
"If you could be his groomsman!!" I finished for him practically screaming with excitement now.
"Yeah!"
"When did you find out?"
"He called a couple minutes ago, I was actually going to call you right away but then (his brother) called asking if I could take care of (his niece) and one thing led to another and we ended up talking for half an hour! We haven't talked in a while and it was good to hear from him."
"That's great. How are (his brother and niece) doing?"
"Um, they're okay, well (niece) is, but I don't know about (brother). He's been having a rough time. I had no idea, but he's unemployed. His work dismissed him a couple weeks ago and he's not sure why. He's on the market though."
"Oh no! That's awful. You can let him know that if he needs me to take care of (niece) anytime soon, I am totally available."
"Thanks Lo, thats super generous. But back to the news at hand!"
"Oh my gosh! Yes! I'm soooooo excited! Anna is going to let me make her dress!"
"That's amazing! I can't wait to see it!"
"Thanks. I'm super excited! Oh, oh! I just realized! You and I might get to walk down the isle together!! You know how typically a bridesmaid and groomsmen get to walk down together! Oh my gosh! This is going to be great!"
