Chapter 2: Temporary Fix

(past) Phoenix's POV:

I knock on her door several times before looking down at the white roses I got her. I hope she likes them, she never did tell me her favorite flower. I hear the door click and my eyes are pleased when they meet hers.

"Hey Handsome." I watch her eyelids flutter as she looks up towards me giving me her award-winning smile.

"Hey Beautiful." I smirk at her as I take in her appearance. She's wearing a light blue dress that ends just above her knees.

I watch her eyes drift towards the roses in my hand and she smiles wider as my hand directs them towards her.

"How did you know I loved white roses?" She asks grabbing them from me and motioning for me to come inside.

"Lucky guess?" I laugh as she fiddles around with a vase before almost knocking it over. She fills it will water and places the roses inside before setting them next to the window.

She walks over to me, "They are beautiful, thank you."

"Are you ready for our date?" I grab her hand and begin to pull her towards the door while walking backwards.

"One more thing," She pulls her polaroid camera out of her pocket and points it towards our faces. The flash burns my eyes a bit, but it doesn't seem to faze her. I noticed how obsessed she seems to be with it, since I bought it for her on her birthday. We took a whole bunch of photos and hung them on her wall together.

"Wow, Phoenix you look hot." She smuggles a few giggles as I reach for the photo.

I grab the photo out of her hands and see why she was laughing, "Hey! I only made that face because the flash was too bright!"

"You still look great though." She tells me as we both break out into laughter.

I look up towards her after taking a bite of my food. She clears her throat and begins to say something when she makes a strange face. I watch as she clutches her heart and her eyes widen.

"What's wrong?" I ask her as I reach for her hand.

She shakes her head back and forth before she starts to cough into her arm.

My eyes widen as I try to process what's going on, "Are you okay?" I ask frantically.

"Nine..." She starts as she begins to cough more, "One, One."

I pull my phone out quickly and dial the number.

"Hello, 911 what's the emergency?" I hear the receiver say on the other line.

"My girlfriend, she's coughing and clutching her heart." I tell them desperately as I watch tears spill from her eyes.

"We'll send help immediately, please stay on the line."

I look back up and notice everybody's concerned expressions as I pick her up and carry her outside. I feel her body fall limp in my arms and realize that she passed out.

"Tempest! Wake up!" I hear sirens ringing in the background as my girlfriend lays unconsciously in my arms.

(present) Tempest POV:

Rowan texted me the address to the party and its not too far away from my house. I figure that I can walk there and then walk home, which could be potentially dangerous, but at this point I don't even care.

I lay in bed silently crying as my memories of Phoenix drift through my mind. As the sun lowers behind the mountain, I decide that I should start getting ready for the party. I grab some black jeans that have holes in the knees, and my favorite burgundy crop top. My hair is already straightened, but I decide to fix my makeup that is smeared all over my face from crying.

After fixing my makeup, I look somewhat presentable as I stare at my reflection. My eyes drift towards my wall behind me and I see the pictures that Phoenix and I hung up of us. I feel my chest sting as I look at them longer through the reflection. I turn my attention back towards myself and notice the tears stinging my eyes. I need a distraction.

I look at my phone as another text from Rowan appears, "Ready to party! See you soon xoxo"

I give myself a small smile in the mirror, "A distraction." I whisper quietly to myself.

My mom tells me to be careful, but that she's happy I'm finally making new friends. She offers me a ride, but I tell her I want to walk.

As I leave the house, I'm glad I grabbed my sweatshirt because of the cool air. It's the first day of fall, Phoenix's favorite season. The streets are darker than what I thought they would be, but I let it consume me. I feel invisible as I walk silently along the sidewalk, with few cars passing me. I know I'm getting closer to the party because I can hear loud music mixed with a few already drunken teens shouting.

I walk towards the large house as a couple people bump into me, some muttering apologizes and some cursing under their breath.

"You made it!" I hear a familiar voice say.

"Yeah, I wouldn't miss it!" I shout over the loud music towards Rowan.

She just smirks and holds out her hand towards me, "Ready to party?"

I place my hand in hers as she walks us inside the house. The music is even louder and there's colorful lights flashing everywhere. People are dancing everywhere with drinks in their hands, and others are making out in the corner.

Rowan leads me into a kitchen that's filled with people who are getting drinks. She pushes them aside and grabs two cups filled with an unknown liquid and hands me one.

I thank her as I bring the cup towards my lips. I welcome the burn as the liquid travels down my throat.

"That's strong." I tell Rowan and continue to gulp it down.

"It's tequila!" Rowan replies laughing as she watches me chug the drink before frowning.

"Are you okay?" She asks me as she looks at my face.

I feel the pain resurface as I drink the last bit in my cup. I notice Rowan looking at me with a concerning face and it just makes me feel worse, "Yeah," I say and reach for more alcohol when I feel her grab my hand, "Are you shitting me right now? You invited me to a party and you're not going to let me get drunk?" I scream and a few heads turn in our direction.

I watch her shake her head at me slowly as she empties her cup in the sink and fills it with water.

"What are you doing?" I ask her as she drinks the water.

"If you're going to get fucked up, you're going to need a friend to make sure you don't get hurt." She replies.

"Are you serious? No, I will not let you ruin your fun because of me." I tell her.

"I know you're struggling with something. The same thing happened to me and I was just like you, except nobody was there for me. I want to be here for you Tempest." She places her hand in my hand and I feel myself starting to cry.

I shake my head at her, "I want the pain to go away Rowan."

She gives me a sad look, "Alcohol is only temporary."

"That's all I need right now." I pour more liquor into my cup and chug it down. It's like a battle between the alcohol and pain in my body, trying to overpower one another. After several more drinks the alcohol will conquer it. A temporary fix. One that could last all night.
