We were lead through the marvelous castle itself, heading down towards the kitchen.

I marveled at how the stairs moved, keeping pace with Jean (who was freaking out), Alice and Lili.

The other first years were towards the front, being bombarded with questions, the older years' obviously trying to forget that hufflepuff's numbers were declining significantly...

As we're we, but I wasn't having much success.

The entrance was a stack of barrels, where you simply had to tap a pattern to get the door to open. Simple enough, memorizing should be easy enough.

The common room was beautiful. It held soft, cushiony chairs and pillows, portraits of smiling students and teachers from all houses, and by each small window there sat a small succulent or plant.

Hence it being night time though, the fireplace and candles instead were the main source of light, bathing the room in light with shadows dancing across the walls.

"Alright, Puffs! Let's all join together for this kiddos' first Bonding Ceremony!!" The older years' instantly knew what was happening and shuffled into a circle, leaving the small group of 14 first years huddling together just outside of it.

"Come along," the kind prefect said, beckoning us over into the circle like we were lost lambs looking for shelter. "We won't bite!"

We approached the circle and filled ourselves into the perimeter of the circle where there were empty spaces.

Jean stood nervously right beside me, and I could almost feel him trembling.

Then, the circle of Hufflepuff started holding each other's hands, connected the circle. I catched on as the student on the right of me slowly grabbed my hand, causing me to grab Jean's almost on instinct.

He nervously looked on and grabbed the other person's name on his right, before looking back at me with confusion.

I shrugged and clenched his hand, hoping he realized I had no idea what was happening either.

"As a Hufflepuff, you are loyal. That's what your told. This bonding ceremony is a very old tradition, our motto is "Family doesn't end in blood." Tonight, we say it in Latin. It's an old spell, that joins us together. We'll be able to feel each other's feelings, for if another puff is upset or being threatened, we may help. Please, repeat after me.

Cognatio non finis in genus."

"Cognatio non finis in genus."

"Cognatio non finis in genus."

Recovering from my initial fear, feeling Jean relax next to me, I caught on, slowly chanting with the others.

Does the other houses do this? I thought, just as I noticed gold sparkles spread like a soft fire from person to person.

It spread down the line, and not a single person stopped chanting. I kept chanting, and watched the gold flames flow through me, making me giggle as a warm feeling spread down to my toes.

Jean shivered as it passed him, but kept chanting.

When it finally finished, the gold light faded, and the chant stopped.

We let go of each other's hands, and as soon as Jean and the 5 year's hand unlatched from mine, a stream of feeling flooded into my mind.

The 5th year was excited, while Jean was mainly nervous.

The other Puffs emotions were a blur, as conversation exploded.
