SAMs pov
I woke up early in the morning in my same cloths but I was laying on the floor in Soda and Pony's room. I sat up and took in my surroundings. When I stood up I noticed that Ponyboy was getting up too and Soda was still asleep. Ponyboy stood up and looked at me.
"What are you doing in here?" He asked.
"I don't know but put something on man," I said shielding my eyes from his underweared body.
"Shit sorry," he said as I threw him a blanket and he wrapped it around his waist. "Do you want a shower?" He asked. "Before I get in."
"Yeah," I said as I grabbed a pair of cloths that was sitting next to me with a note attached to it. The note read, "I assumed at you were gonna want a shower. So I grabbed some cloths for you I didn't change you because your a girl, but be ready to shield your eyes from Ponyboy we couldn't get cloths on him once we took his shirt and pants off because he kept kicking your in here because Tim Shepherd came and is sleeping on the couch. From Darry." I put the note down and then grabbed the cloths. "I'll be quick," I said jumping up and into the shower.
It took me a couple of minutes but I managed to get in and get out. When I got out Ponyboy went in. It only took him a few minutes when he came out he had a towel around his waist and headed for his room to get dressed. When he came back out he went to the kitchen. He grabbed a pan and some eggs and a spatula and put it on the stove.
"Hey Tim," I said realizing that Tim Shepard was on the couch still.
"Hey kid," he said looking up from the newspaper that was in his hands.
"Can we fix you any breakfast?" I asked.
"No," he replied as he stood up and grabbed his coat. "Thank for the use if your couch," he said again grabbing his newspaper and leaving.
With in a few minutes of Tim leaving we heard the door open.
"Anybody home?" I heard Two-bit yell inside.
"Yeah in here," Ponyboy said. "Don't slam the door." Two-bit didn't listen he slammed the door anyways.
Two-bit came around one side and Steve came around the other.
"Ponyboy Curtis!" Two-bit shouted as he hugged him and spun him around causing Pony to drop his spatula and ruin his eggs.
"Sammi Delerosso!" Steve yelled giving me a hug from behind and picking me up I was laughing a little bit, but Pony was mad.
"What are you doing!" He said angrily. "Look what you did. You made me ruin my eggs and drop my spoon."
"Look at the blonde headed monkeys," Two-bit said ignoring Ponyboy and looking at both of our heads. Steve put me down and pulled out a news paper and walked next to the stove.
"I wouldn't have believed it, if I hadn't seen it in the paper." Steve said looking at the paper. "Tell me Ponyboy and Sammi, what's it like being a hero?"
"A what?" Pony and I said at the same time.
"A hero," Steve repeated. "You know like a big shot," he handed the paper to Pony as Two-bit grabbed a beer out of the fridge. "Beer for breakfast Two-bit?"
I was looking over Pony's shoulder at the paper. "They're charging Johnny with man slaughter?" I asked.
"What do they mean "if he recovers"?" Ponyboy asked.
"It also says how you guys saved them kids," Steve said eating some cake that he pulled from the fridge. "They'd have burned to death of it wasn't for you."
"Dallas will be mad," I said. "They didn't mention his police record."
"It's all about us," Pony said walking towards the living room. "Darry, me and Soda. They're think about putting me and Soda in a boys home? They don't know about Sam..." He stopped for a second. "No way!" Pony said putting the paper on the coffee table. "They ain't putting me in a boys home."
"They don't do that to heroes," Steve said. "Where is Soda and Super-dope anyhow?"
All of a sudden out of nowhere Darry came in, "Super-what?" He asked Steve picking him up and tossing him to the side.
"All brawn, no brain." Steve mumbled.
"Shut the door," I heard Soda say as he got out of the shower with just a towel around his waist. Steve was at the side of the door waiting for him.
Steve tried to feed Soda a piece of cake, but Soda moved his hand and shook his head no.
"Have you seen my shirt somewhere?" Soda asked Darry.
"I hate to tell you this buddy, but You have to wear pants too," Steve said referring to the towel that Soda was wearing. "I think there's a law or something.
"How about my jeans?" Soda asked Darry.
"I ironed them," Darry told him. "They're in my closet. Hurry you'll be late."
"After we stomp the Socs real good, Steve and I are gonna throw a party so we can get drunk." Soda announced. Steve made a loud sound.
"Where are you gonna get the dough little man?" Darry asked with a smile.
"I'll think of something." Soda assured him. "Hey Two-bit," Soda called from the living room then sitting on the couch still in his towel. "Micky's on TV."
We all liked Micky mouse but two-bit loved him. We all went out to the living room and watched it for a second Steve was still eating his piece of cake.
"I hate leaving you 2 by yourself." Darry said. "Maybe I should take the day off."
"We'll be okay," I said. "We've stayed by ourselves before."
"Besides we can't afford it," Pony said.
"Yes, but I should stay." Darry said.
"Don't worry I'll babysit them." Two-bit said as Ponyboy and I hit him in the back of the head, but he chose to take down Pony I just laughed a little.
"Why don't you get a job for a living Two-bit?" I asked.
"Come on Soda!" Steve yelled to Soda who came back out dressed. "We gotta get to work."
"I've gotta quit smoking," Pony breathed heavily on the floor with Two-bits arms around his neck. "Or I can't do track next year."
"You gotta do the dishes!" Darry announced to Pony and I.
"I'm gonna cut off you air." Two-bit said with his arms still around Pony's neck.
"Two-bit lay off," Darry told him. "He ain't looking so good."
"Lazy bum," Ponyboy told Two-bit as Darry helped him up.
Darry was about to walk out of the house when he turned around.
"You 2 smoke more then a pack today..." Darry started talking to Pony and I. "...I'll skin you, you understand." I nodded but Pony came back with a smart remark.
"If you carry more then one roofing at a time," Pony began. "Me Soda and Sammi will skin you, understand?" Darry looked at me and Soda and I turned around and quickly walked away.
"Soda shoes," Steve reminded him as he walked with me quickly around.
I came back with a piece of cake and Soda came back with his shoes.
"Say hi to Johnny," Darry told us as he started to leave.
"All right," I said as Darry, Steve and Soda all left for work.
"We gotta clean up this house," Pony told us as we started cleaning up dishes. "The cops and reporters will come by...and it's time for the state to check on us."
"Shoot this house ain't messy," Two-bit said. "You ought to see my house."
"We have," I told him.
"If you had the sense of a billy goat..." Pony started. "...you'd clean up your house instead of bumming around ours."
"Shoot," Two-bit said. "If I ever did that my mom would die of shock...literally."
Once we finished cleaning up some we started for a restaurant to eat some real breakfast we were turned around and Two-bit was trying to hitch us a ride.
"I would drive my car, but the breaks went out," Two-bit told us. "Almost killed me and Kathy. You guys should meet her brother. Now there's a hood. He's so greasy he glides when he walks." He flipped a guy off who didn't stop for us and continued. "He goes to the barber shop for an oil change, not a haircut." We turned around when we saw the blue mustangs that Bob used to ride in. "Stay close," Two-bit told us as we walked a little faster.
"What do they want?" I asked as we walked to the front door of the diner and noticed that they followed us.
"I don't know. How many where there in the car." Two-bit asked.
"Four or five," I replied.
"Let's hurry inside," Ponyboy said as he opened the door.
"Let's see what they want," Two-bit said standing there.
"Why do you want to know what they want?" I asked.
"Just stay here," he said as Ponyboy came back out and let the door close.
The Socs from the car came strolling towards us.
"No jabs before the rumble!" Two-bit called to Randy. "You know the rules ape face."
"We know," Randy replied. "I want to talk to you." He was referring to Ponyboy.
Pony looked at me and Two-bit.
"Go ahead I'll keep my eye on him." Two-bit said.
"Speaking of the rumble pal..." One of the Socs started. "Are you really gonna let a girl fight with you guys?" He laughed. I started to go at him, but Two-bit stopped me and held on to my wrists.
"Calm down they're trying to break you so you break the rules first." Two-bit told me. I yanked my wrists out of his grasp. "Check out their pants!" He yelled while laughing making sure that Pony could hear him. I watched Randy and Pony get into the Mustang and I laughed too. "Are you boys waiting for a flood?" We continued to laugh. "I hear they stomp your face into gorilla cookies."
"Your funny," one the other Socs said sarcastically.
Two-bit continued to make more and more jokes. Randy honked the horn as Ponyboy got out.
"You're real funny Two-bit," a Soc said sarcastically again. "Let's go," he said to the rest of the Socs.
"Now get the hell out of here!" I told them.
"See you at the rumble.," Two-bit said as Ponyboy stopped in front of us. "What did "Mr. Super-Soc" have to say?" Two-bit asked.
"He ain't a Soc. Just a guy who wanted to talk." Ponyboy said as we started walking to the hospital. I followed him and Two-bit said bye to 2 other greasers.
When we finally got to the hospital we had to argue with a nurse before a doctor came by and told her to let us in. We went in to see Johnny. He was laying on his stomach and couldn't move he had to look in a mirror to see around him.
"Hey Johnny," I said as we entered and stood next to his bed.
"How they treatin' you, kid?" Two-bit asked. "You got your picture in the paper for being a hero. Look at that." Two-bit laid the paper on the mirror to show him.
"That's tough enough, huh?" Johnny said slowly.
"I guess you can look at it later," Two-bit told Johnny as he picked up the paper and put it on a table near his bed.
"Do you want anything?" I asked.
"A book," Johnny started. "Can you get me another one?"
"What?" Two-bit asked.
"He wants 'Gone With The Wind'" I told Two-bit.
"So I can read it to him," Ponyboy told us. "Would you mind getting it?" He asked referring to Two-bit.
"No,"Two-bit replied. "I'll go get it from the gift shop downstairs."
"So...." Ponyboy started. "I guess Dal's gonna be okay. Me and Darry, we're getting along real good now." Pony was starting to cry and so was I. Suddenly Johnny winced in pain.
"Johnny are you okay?" I asked a little nervous.
"It just hurts sometimes," Johnny started to explain to us. "Not usually, because I can't feel anything below the middle of my back. I'm pretty bad off ain't I?"
"No, you'll be alright kid," I was scared and I didn't believe me, but I had to encourage him to keep going and to keep fighting. "You gotta be." I started crying. "We couldn't get along without you." That was true if Johnny died we wouldn't because he's the one who keeps us fighting he's the little dark puppy of the gang the gangs pet I guess you could call him. The one that brings us all together. The one that keeps us alive.
"I won't be able to walk again," Johnny began to inform us. "Not even on crutches. Doc says I busted my back."
"Your gonna be fine," Ponyboy said as he too began to cry. "I know you are."
"You want to know something Ponyboy and Sammi?" Johnny asked. "I used to talk about killing myself all the time. I don't want to die now. It ain't long enough. 16 years ain't gonna be long enough. Hell, I wouldn't mind so much if there wasn't so much stuff I ain't done yet...so many damn things i ain't seen yet. That time that we were up in Windrixville...was the only time I've ever been away from our neighborhood."
"Knock it off," I cried. "If you get too juiced up, the doc won't let us see you anymore."
"Your mothers here to see you," a nurse came in to tell Johnny.
"I don't want to see her!" Johnny told her.
"It's your mother, she's here to see you." The nurse said again
"I said I don't want to see her!" Johnny was starting to get mad. "She probably just wants to tell me how much trouble I'm causing. Why don't you tell her to leave me al----" Johnny stopped then made a weird noise and passed out. Then Two-bit walked in with the book.
"Pony, Sammi is he ok?" Two-bit asked sounding a little scared.
"I don't know," we both said at the same time on the other side of the bed as we stood there looking at him too scared to move.
"He's all right," the nurse assured us. "You just can't see him now."
"You make sure he gets this, all right," Two-bit told the nurse. Even he started to cry a little bit.
"Okay," the nurse replied as we all left the room.
"He's my son," we heard Johnny's mom yell at the nurse. "He'd rather see these no good punks then his own mother!" She complained as we looked at her. "You scum!" She said right to us.
"No wonder he hates your guts!" Two-bit started crying. "You don't care about him you damn drunk. You go to hell, you go straight to hell." He didn't even try to hold the tears back he just let them go. And because we couldn't let him hit a girl and go to jail we put our arm around him and lead him to Dally's room.
We walked to Dally's room and let Two-bit settle down. When he quit crying we went in.
"What have you done with your gown?" Dally's nurse asked. I realized that Dally was shirt less and that if he didn't have a gown on...pant less.
"I threw it away!" Dally told her as he looked at her. Then he looked at us. "Get out your making my stomach sick."
"Oh I'm gonna be so glad when your out of here," the nurse mumbled as she walked out of the room and left the door open.
"Hey how are you doing," Two-bit said.
"How are you doing, man." Dally smiled.
"Here, I swiped you a gift," Two-bit said tossing a small gift onto Dally's chest.
"It's good to see you guys," Dally said looking at it then putting it on the side table and standing up. "This place gives me the creeps" He came over to me and kissed moe then went and closed the door and as I assumed he was in only underwear. When he came back to his bed he gave me another kiss then laid back down in his bed and put covers on. "I want out." He was laying on his back. "Tim Shepherd dropped by. He saw my picture in the paper. He couldn't believe that it didn't say, "wanted dead or alive" underneath it. He told me about the rumble. I hate missing it. You got a cigarette?" He asked sitting up as Two-bit tossed him a pack. "Thanks," Dally said pulling the last one out. Then he looked up at us. "How is he? How's Johnny doing, man?"
"I don't know about stuff like this..." Two-bit started. "...but he didn't look too good."
"He passed out cold before we left," I told him looking down to avoid eye contact with him.
I heard the bed squeak which was a sign that he was laying back down I was right I looked up and he threw his broken cigarette across the room.
"You still got that knife?" Dally asked still facing away from us.
"What?" Two-bit asked.
"That knife," Dally said. "Give it to me, will you?" He held his arm and hand out around him still facing away from us.
Two-bit took out his favorite black handled switch blade and looked at it. Then made the decision to give it to Dally. He placed it in his hand and Dally brought it in front of him on the other side of the bed.
"We gotta win that fight tonight," Dally was mad and you could hear it in his voice. "We gotta get even with those Socs!" He stabbed he bed with the knife in anger and made Two-bit get a worried look on his face. Dally turned around and looked at us. "Let's do it for Johnny, man!" He was breathing a little heavy with the knife in front of him. "We'll do it for Johnny!" He stated at the knife then put it on his head and took a deep breath. We started to leave. "Sam wait," Dally called.
I turned around.
"We'll wait for you outside the door okay?" Two-bit told me.
"Okay," I said as I walked back over to the bed and Two-bit closed the door behind them.
Dally closed the knife and sat up in his bed.
"I have something for you." He told me. "Come here and sit down." I walked over to the bed and sat down next to him. I was a little nervous because he was just mad.
He opened the drawer on the small table next to him where he had tossed the gift that Two-bit swiped for him and pulled out a small box.
"I bought this for you," he said handing me the box with a smile.
I opened it. It was a ring.
"Dally," I smiled.
"It's a promise ring," he told me. "I want to be with you forever Sam." I slid the ring onto my middle finger of my right hand.
I gave dally a hug. "Thank you," I whispered.
He hugged me back, "you've got a week before your 18 and Darry will let you do anything with your life." He told me as he regales end the hug. "I still have 2 months, but I can do whatever I want because no one cares anyways. When you turn 18 will you come with me?" He asked.
"Come with you where?" I asked as I looked into his dark brown eyes.
"Come live with me," he told me. "I'm gonna try my best to get a house in the neighborhood with what ever money I have then."
"Ya," I told him.
"All right," he said. "I promise that we will get a house when you turn 18 okay. And I'm not gonna break a promise to you." He gave me a gentle kiss and then looked at me. "Do you trust me?" He asked.
"yeah," I said. "Why wouldn't I?"
"I don't know you just seem a little tense," he told me.
"I'm okay," I said. "It's just I'm a little nervous about the rumble tonight."
"Don't worry," Dally told me in a soft voice. "I'm not gonna let anyone hurt you." He smiled at me. "I'll see you later." He told me as I stood up and he laid back down.
"See you," I said.
"Wait," he said still laying down. "Come here," he told me motioning me to come closer and closer. When I was close enough we kissed for a second. I smiled then left.
