"Johnny?" I questioned when I woke up and realized that he wasn't laying next to us anymore. I looked at my surroundings and realized that I had Johnny's jacket on me and the one dally gave Ponyboy on me. Then I looked right next to me and realized that Ponyboy wasn't there. I looked down and saw a note written in the dirt. It read: be back soon, Johnny.
That answered my question about Johnny he went to go get some food. I got up and went out to where the pump was at and found Ponyboy washing his face.
"Hey," I said walking over to him.
"Hey," he replied a little startled.
"Did you figure out the pump?" I asked.
"Ya," he told me wiping the water from his face. "You have to pump it 3 or 4 times before it decides to work."
"Oh," I said. "I woke up late last night really thirsty and I couldn't figure it out, probably because I was half asleep," I laughed a little and so did he.
Once I got a drink we herd whistling.
"Come on," Ponyboy said grabbing my hand and we went into a hole and in the ground.
Johnny walked by and pony and I climbed outta the hole. Pony tripped on his way up.
"Hiya Johnny," he said when he fell. "What did you get?"
"I swear your becoming to act like Two-bit every day," Johnny said as Ponyboy stood up.
"Who's acting?" He questioned as I started looking around in the box that Johnny had.
"Let's wait till we're inside," he told me turning the box the opposite way and walk towards the church.
We got inside and Johnny put the box on the table and started going through some of the food.
"I loaf of bread, a weeks supply of baloney, peanut butter..." He began pulling stuff out. I however start going through the not so important stuff and came across a book.
"Gone with the wind?" I questioned as Ponyboy looked right over my shoulder.
"How did you know I always wanted a copy?" Pony asked Johnny.
"I remember you said something once," Johnny told him. "We went and saw the movie, remember?"
"Maybe you can read it aloud to kill time," I suggested.
"Thanks Johnny," he said with a smile.
"Cigarettes," I started up again. "A deck of cards, peroxide?"
"You ain't thinking--" Ponyboy started Johnny cut him off.
"Where gonna cut our hair," Johnny started telling him as I pulled out some chocolate. "You and  Sammi will bleach yours." I looked up and around right away.
"What's!" I practically yelled.
"Our descriptions will be in the newspapers!" Johnny told us. "Pony and I will have to anyways if we ever get caught. The judge would make us get a hair cut."
"I don't see why," Ponyboy said.
"I don't either," Johnny replied. "I think it's a way to break us."
"What!" I yelled again. "There is no way I'm bleaching my hair!"
"I'm gonna cut mine too," Johnny told me. "And I'm gonna wash all the grease out."
"You ain't touching my hair," I told him.
"Mine either," Ponyboy said grabbing a candy bar and sitting down.
"It's gonna grow back Pony," Johnny told him. "It's not that it won't."
"Go ahead,"pony said as Johnny started cutting. "Ow,"
"Sorry," Johnny said giving the chunk of hair to Ponyboy. "Dang knife." He said again a Pony complained again.
"Don't pull so hard!" Pony complained eating some chocolate.
"Quit gabbing," Johnny told him as he continued to cut.
"Can I see now?" Pony asked putting the chocolate bar down.
"No,"Johnny told him. "We gotta bleach it first."
"Bleach it and quit cutting!" Ponyboy told him impatiently.
When Johnny finally quit cutting we went outside to bleach it.
"Sam you bleach it," Johnny told me handing me a bottle of peroxide.
"Me!?" I questioned. "Why me? I have no clue how to do that."
"Neither do I" Johnny told me. "But your a girl so you have natural knowledge with it."
"You need help," I told him handing him the bottle and walking away.
"Fine," he said. "I'll do it."
I came back out a few minutes later and Johnny picked up a mirror.
"This will do." Johnny said holding up a mirror as Pony put is cigarette in his mouth. "Here."
"Jeez,"Pony said looking at himself in the mirror. "This really makes me look tough."
"Go ahead," Johnny told Pony. "Get you jollies."
Pony put a smile on his face and took Johnny's blade.
"My pleasure," he told him.
"Yeah I know it is," Johnny told him sitting still waiting. Pony stated cutting Johnny's hair. "Be nice."
"It hurts don't it?" Pony stated as he threw a chunk on the ground.
"Yeah, yeah," Johnny told him as he winced in pain. "Come on man I didn't cut that much off of you."
"It was your idea smarty," Ponyboy reminded him.
It took about 5 minutes before they Pony finally finished Johnny's hair.
"I don't look too bad," Johnny said looking in the mirror.
"Because you didn't bleach yours me and Sam did," Ponyboy said pointing at me.
"Shoot," Johnny said looking up at he. "We haven't done Sammi's hair yet."
"Oh, join the party Sammi." Pony smiled.
"No," I told them. "No, no, no you ain't touch my hair I like my hair dark and I plan to keep it that way."
"Come on Sammi we did our hair," Johnny told me. "You don't gotta cut your hair just bleach it."
"I would rather die," I told him.
"Hey Sammi," pony started.
"Yeah," I said looking at him.
"You like football don't you?" He questioned.
"Ya I play it with you guys all the time." I told him. "You know this you and your brothers have tackled me plenty of times along with the other boys of course but still."
"Ok," Ponyboy said as a smile came across his face.
"Ponyboy I swear!" I said realizing what he was thinking.
"Johnny grab the peroxide and be ready." Ponyboy said.
Johnny picked up 2 bottles of peroxide and got ready. Ponyboy came charging at me an knocked me over.
"Ponyboy!" I said struggling to break free.
I started to get up but Johnny came running over and I was back to the ground again and I wasn't able to get up. Johnny started to bleach my hair. When he was finally done they helped me up and brought me to the mirror.
"Oh my gosh!" I almost yelled. "I look awful."
"You look fine," Ponyboy said.
"Ponyboy Curtis!" I said. "Your dead!"
"What! Why?" He laughed. "What the hell did I do?"
"You tackled me!" I said as I started chasing him.
Ponyboy continued to laugh as he ran away from me. Of course he was faster because he was on the track team but when he slowed down I tackled him.
"Did you go to the damn gym or something?" Ponyboy asked as I let him up.
"No, you know none of us can afford that." I told him.
"Are you two kittens done fighting?" Johnny laughed as he came towards us.
"Yeah," I told him as he reached to help me up. "Why don't you come join us down here." I said again as I grabbed his hand and pulled him down with us.
"Whoa!" Johnny said as he landed right on top of us.
All 3 of us laughed and Johnny sat up and sat next to us.
"You feel better now?" He asked with a laugh.
"Nope still hate my hair and I'm gonna hide it."I told them standing up.
"Hide?" Johnny asked. "How the hell are you gonna do that?"
"Trust me I will find a way," I told him walking back into the church.
I didn't find a way to cover up my hair and it made me a little upset. We all sat down in the sanctuary area.
"Well I guess we're disguised." I said still upset about my hair.
"I guess so," Ponyboy said with a little pout as he threw and empty pack of cigarettes.
"It's just hair," Johnny told him putting and arm around us.
"Just hair?" I asked. "Just freaking hair? Are you outta your mind! My moms gonna kill me when she finds out about my hair she told me she wanted to see my natural hair all the time and she would dis own me if I got it bleached or dyed." I was freaking out a bit. "What's she gonna think now," I started to cry a little bit.
"Man this is like being in a Halloween costume that we can't get out of and we both hate it!" Pony said.
"Look I'm sorry you guys but we didn't really have much of a choice now did we," Johnny said. "We are in a lot of trouble and we can't get caught."
"You know just last night we where walking cherry and Marcia home, just last night we were laying in the lot looking up at the stars," Ponyboy started crying too.
Johnny stood up angrily, "would you shut up about last night!" Johnny said. "I killed a kid last night," by then he was crying too. "He couldn't have been more then 17 or 18 how would you like to live with that."
"I'm sorry Johnny," Ponyboy cried.
"You know pony and Sammi you 2 aught to go home it's not fair for Darry and Soda to worry about you guys or you parents Sam." Johnny continued to cry. "It was wrong for me to bring a 13 year old kid along with me and a girl who is soon gonna have a life in about a month."
"There is no life for me out there!" I cried as I stood up. "There is nothing out there for me except for maybe Dally."
"No!" Ponyboy said realizing something. "I'm 14 and I've been 14 for a month and we're in this just as much as you are." We all sat down in a bench.
"Man there sure is a lot of blood inside of people," Johnny cried.
We all sat there crying for a while.
"This isn't what we do," I said calming down a little bit. "We have to stick together on this and wait for Dally to come get us and it will be soon," I said standing up as we all headed to the warm area.
We all sat there and huddled together it was really cold in the church and it was gonna get colder. I fell asleep right in the middle of them and we all kept each other warm. A few days later we where eating baloney sandwiches and Ponyboy was reading "Gone With the Wind".
" "Lying in the pit of the sun, shoulder to shoulder, head to feet...were hundreds of wounded men lying in the tracks, the sidewalks...stretched out in endless rows under the car shed. Some lay stiff and still, but many withered in the hot sun. Everywhere swarms of flies hovered over the me...crawling and buzzing in their faces." " Pony read.
"Man that's gross," Johnny said taking another bite of his sandwich.
I just nodded and told him to go on.
He continued, " "Everywhere was blood, dirty bandages, groans...screamed curses of pain."
For the next few days we read and we played cards Johnny took most of our cigarettes while playing poker. There were kids and people outside all the time playing and having fun out in the open. All I could think about is going home I didn't know how much longer it would be before Dally was gonna come get us. I started feeling home sick and I missed the rest of the gang. One morning I woke up to Ponyboy leaving to go outside Johnny and I followed him it was pretty early and really cold. Pony went out to watch the sunrise it was beautiful.
"That sure was pretty," I said as I came up next to him.
"Yeah," he breathed.
"The mist is what's pretty, all gold and silver," Ponyboy said as he looked at Johnny and I and smiled.
"To bad it can't stay like that all the time," Johnny said a little disappointed.
"Nothing gold can stay," Ponyboy said slowly.
"Huh?" I questioned.
"Natures first green is gold,
"Her hardest hue to hold,
"Her early leafs a flower;
"But only so an hour,
"Then leaf subsides to leaf.
"So Eden sank to grief,
"So dawn goes down to day
"Nothing gold can stay," Ponyboy recited the poem slowly.
"Where did you learn it?" I asked. "That's what I ment.
"Robert Frost wrote it," Pony told us. "I always remembered it because I never quite knew what he ment by it."
"You know I never noticed colors, clouds and stuff until you kept reminding me about them." Johnny said looking at Pony.
"It's like they were never there before," I told him.
"I don't think that I could ever tell Steve or Two-bit," Pony started. "Or Darry about the clouds and the sunsets, just you 2 and Sodapop. Maybe Cherry Valance," he smiled.
"I guess we're different," I told him with a warm smile.
"I guess so," pony said as we headed back inside.
For the rest of the day we found new looking wood and made what we considered 3 beds. We had no idea how much longer we were gonna be there and we didn't want to stay on the cold rocky floors. Once we finally finished our beds it was around 10 something. We pushed the 3 of them together so they where right next to each other. I slept on the end then Ponyboy and then Johnny on the other end.
*Next morning*
I felt someone kiss me and immediately I knew who it was. I shot up.
"Dally!" I said wrapping my arms around him.
"Hey," he laughed as I let go and sat back down.
He went to Ponyboy's bed and grabbed his hair turning his head side to side to get a better look at it.
"Hey blondie," he laughed. "Wake up." He walked over to Johnny's bed and kicked the foot of the bed. "Johnny rise and shine, man."
"How's Soda doing?" Pony asked sitting up. "Is he upset."
"Are the fuzz after us?" I asked.
"Wait a second," Dally laughed. "One thing at a time. Are you 3 hungry? I'm starving."
"You're starving?" I asked. "Try baloney for four days."
Dally laughed. "Any of you guys got a Cancer stick?" I reached into my pocket and realized I had no more.
"Johnny has them all," I told him as Johnny reached into his pocket and handed Dally a Cigarette and me one too.
"I got a special delivery for Ponyboy Curtis." Dally said pulling a piece of paper from his pocket and handing it to Ponyboy.
"Who's this from?" Pony asked taking it.
"President," Dally said with a serious look. "Of the United States of America."
"Yeah right," Pony said starting to unfold the paper.
"No for real," Dally said starting to get a smile. "From your brother Sodapop."
"How did he know we were here?" Ponyboy asked.
"I said I didn't know where you were, but he didn't believe me." Darry said as he blew smoke out of his mouth and sat on the bed I was sitting in. "He really wanted you to get it."
"What's going on with the cops," Johnny asked.
"Did you here anything?" I asked.
"How come you got hauled in?" Ponyboy asked once he got through the letter.
"Those boys at the station know me by now." Dally told him as he put his arm around me. "While I was there they beat it out of me that," he started laughing a little. "You guys were headed for Texas."
"Texas!" I said shocked. "Jeez."
"Look at you two with your hair," Dally said changing the subject on mine and Ponyboy's hair. "I can't believe that, Blondes, man."
"I know I look lousy but don't rub it in," Ponyboy said with a small pout.
"Against it from the start," I told him.
"Then why do you have you hair done?" Dally asked playing with my hair.
"Ponyboy and Johnny freaking tackled me!" I told him.
"Like we do in football?" Dally asked.
"Exactly like that," I told him as I threw my cigarette on the ground and put it out and we headed outside to the car that Dally drove up here in.
"Want to go get something to eat?" Dally asked.
"Ya lets get outta here," I said as we all jumped in.
