| Happy Update! So two of the cats in my care don't get along, so we've FINALLY gotten them away from each other. Snowball, our eldest cat, began to take steps to being comfortable and not being frightened of coming out of my brothers' bedroom. Today, she came up and rubbed against my hand, and let me pet her and brush her fur. I rewarded her with a cat treat, as she hasn't let anyone touch her, at all. She's a rescue and we don't know her background, but we're (meaning mostly me because my fam. is totally oblivious to their mental health) taking care of her and helping her best we can. Have a lovely day~! |

I was tending the bar while Timothy stepped out, wearing my uniform of a simple, brown dress. My corset was killing my lungs per usual, but I toughed it out. I wouldn't be caught dead without one, especially not in public. I might as well have just worn just my nightgown. I scoffed at the thought, and pushed my rebellious black hair back into a lazy ponytail. I looked up momentarily as two men entered the bar.

"Hello, miss. Two beers, please." Said the tall, bald headed man.

"Coming right up, sir." I gave them a friendly smile as they both sat on stools nearby.

I pulled out two tankards and filled them both to the brim with beer. I handed them to the men, and he handed me a generous handful of coins. A smile of gratitude crossed my face, and I thanked him before getting back to work. Not even a minute later, the usual three burst in with their usual, loud obnoxious selves. One was a French Immigrant, a good looking one as well, then there was the younger looking one, with freckles. Then...

"Well hi there~" A voice purred. The man smirked smugly. He wore  bandanna on his forehead.

I chuckled and sighed before pushing him back with the palm of my hand to his forehead. "I already told you, it's not going to happen."

"Come on, I know you wanna~" Mr.Flirty pursued.

"Hercules, leave the poor girl be." French boy elbowed his friend.

I smiled politely. "What can I-"

"Well if it ain't the prodigy of Princeton College!" Freckles exclaimed, interrupting me.

The man I just served tensed up a bit and forced a smile.

"Aaron Burr!" Mr. Flirty piped in.

I tuned out of their conversation as Timothy returned to the station. I took a bin and began taking cups and plates off tables. As I did so I heard bits and pieces of their conversation.

Revolution...A colony that runs independently...Life without a monarchy...FIGHT.

Take a shot

Rise up...

I nearly dropped my plate. How could I have been so oblivious? I'd been selfish, fleeing to the colonies to hide from my father. The exact place he'd be right now. My hands began to shake. Instead of avoiding him, I'd gone right to him.

"Jade? Earth to Jade!" Timothy snapped in front of my face.

"S-sorry Timothy, I, I just spaced out I guess."

"Uh huh. I see you staring at that Frenchman."

I blushed, but was grateful that was what he was thinking. "W-what?! No, no way!"

He chuckled. "Sure."

I smiled. "Um, if you don't mind, I'm going to head home early. I suddenly am not feeling so well."

"Told you not to work the bar last night." He tsked. I rolled my eyes.

"I didn't think it would be too bad. I can't sleep most nights anyways." She shrugged.

"Not letting you do it again." He said sternly.

"Okay, Father." I joked.

He smiled. "Be safe on your way, okay?"

"Okay. See you tomorrow." I waved as I put my black cloak on, and fastened the pin at the front. I walked out of the bar and down the street towards my small cabin just out of town. I just raised the coin for it last month.

As I approached my cozy cabin, the local stray dog came bounding up to me. I had been taking care of him since he got into a fight, and was left for dead. I smiled as he lept up on me. "Hey, Scruffy!" I embraced him and he whined happily, his tail wagging indefinitely.

"You wanna go inside?" I said to excite him. It worked and he got down and ran around me, before I headed to the door. I went to unlock it when I heard something inside shift. I paused, and motioned to Scruffy to be quiet. I drew a knife from my belt, and cautiously opened the door. There, searching through my side table on the opposite side of the room, was  a redcoat solider.

Slowly and carefully, I took a pan off the stove, which was by the door, and walked behind the man. I raised the pan and brought it down hard on his head. He toppled forward before collapsing  onto the floor. She put the pan down, and dragged the man into the side room, and tied him securely to a chair.

"Scruffy, go get the neighbor, boy!" She patted her thighs twice. He barked and scrambled out of the house.

Jade searched the man's clothing for hidden weapons. She removed a switchblade, a pistol, and a dagger in his boot. She put them in her safe underneath her bed, then stood guard. Her neighbor came in with his pistol, and his expression became horrific at the sight of the redcoat.

"By all what happened?"

"I came in and found him rummaging through my things. So I whacked him upside the head and tied him up. What do you want done with him?"

"I'll take him to the camp. Thank you, Jade." He smiled.

"Of course." I nodded.

He took the soldier away and Jade was finally able to make food for herself and Scruffy. It wasn't much, but it filled the void in her stomach. After eating she washed up the plates and got into her night clothes. She was exhausted and would have to work tomorrow. She crawled into bed, and slowly drifted to sleep.
