Penny gazed out the window of the beach house. She was sad that it was raining on the day before they had to leave. Her summer vacation was over and she was going back to school in a week. She heard a small yip and looked down to see Draco, her new husky pup, looking up at her. She could see that he wanted to play and she smiled softly at him as she picked up the ball and tossed it gently for him.
She let out a small giggle as his short puppy legs took off quickly, causing him to topple over adorably as he skirted around the corner into the hall to get the ball. He was already three months old and was growing fast in her opinion.
A few moments later he came waddling back, with his ball in his mouth, proud of himself for a 'job well done'. He dropped the ball on the floor by the sofa she was lounging on and looked up at her expectantly as his tail began to wiggle back and forth showing her how excited he was to be playing a game. Penny laughed and scooped up the wiggly bundle of fur and cuddled with him while he licked her face.
"You make it so hard to be sad, Dray. I love you too death."
She didn't hear the door to the front of the house open as her parents entered and she nearly jumped when she heard her name.
"Penny, we brought pizza, pop and a dessert if you want some."
She called back.
"Of course I do. Be right there."
She stood and put Draco on the ground. He danced around her slippered feet as she headed for the kitchen. She loved pizza and her parents always made it a Friday night thing while she was growing up. Today it was a 'last night at the beach house thing' and they knew that it would cheer her right up after the long rainy day.
As she entered the kitchen the delicious aroma filled her nose and she inhaled deeply before she went to the pantry to take out the paper plates and plasticware. No one wanted to do dishes and she knew it would be an easy cleanup this way. She carried the items along with napkins to the table and then sat down after setting them each a plate.
He parents had run to their bedroom quickly to change, putting on dry clothes.
When they returned, she smiled, as all of them dug into the food.
They ate in silence for a moment, when she noticed that they were giving each other concerned looks, then looking back at her. This was confusing to her and she watched them closely for a moment.
"Mom? Dad? What's wrong?"
She set her slice of pizza down to wipe her hands and take a drink of her coke before she reached for the garlic bread on her plate.
Looking up at them expectantly, she tore a piece off the bread and stuck it in her mouth.
Her mother looked down ashamed and her father took in a deep breath before he spoke.
