Chapter 1: Alice

My sister, Clara, squealed with glee as she ran upstairs to go pack. we were just told that we were going to California for the summer. Clara was in college majoring in theater and apparently California is, as she puts it, where her dreams will come true.

I swear that we are opposites. She wants to be in fairy tales and I want to create fairy tales, she has blonde hair I have brown hair. She is afraid of everything but is outgoing and sometimes I swear she has logorrhea, while I'm shy yet dauntless. Oh and she gets way to excited over everything, thus explaining her childish squealing for someone whose TWENTY! I'm only sixteen and I'm not even that excited, probably because I hate beaches, but still, I would prefer the mountains any day.

"Hey mom", my sister yells from her bedroom upstairs," should I bring my pink sequin top or that blue crop top that I got this weekend,"

"Go with the,"

"Never mind I'll bring both", she calls down cutting mom off. Mom and I look at each other, rolling our eyes at Clara's claraness. That's the only way we can described her, being Clara. I laugh and go upstairs to my bedroom. I shove t-shirts and shorts in my suitcase and within five minuets I'm done packing. I go back downstairs and hear my sister singing California Girls by Katy Perry. I smile at her happiness, even though I wasn't thrilled about this vacation I was glad my sister was happy. I grab and apple from the fridge and go back to my room to read. I was reading Frankenstein, again. It was creepy and a classic, the two best qualities for a book in my opinion, thus making it my favorite book. I finish my apple but continue reading until I fall asleep.

The week goes by in a blur of eating sleeping and reading a book a day until it was finally the day to head to California. We were driving there from North Carolina so it was going to take about two days, but we would be on the road the whole time, only stopping to use the restroom, eat, and to switch drivers...fun.

After hours of driving my father switches out so Clara can drive. She giddily hops in and we are once again on our way. We all are soon lulled to sleep to the purring sound of the engine.

"What did you do, where are we!", I hear my mother scream.

"I- I don't know I got tired and there was this gigantic wreck on the highway and I got turned around, I thought I was going the right way I swear!", Clara defends herself and I can tell that she'd been crying.

"But yet you still let the car run out of gas in the middle of nowhere!"

Mom continues yelling and I look for dad. When I spot him he's on the phone, probably calling a tow truck or something. I sigh and sink down into the seat and go off into my own world. I was reading Peter Pan at the moment and I was sucked into his world, in Neverland.

I sit there dreaming about pirates, mermaids, and flying until I hear my name.

"I'll go get Alice". It was my sister's voice. I stretch and my eyes flutter open, landing on Clara waiting expectantly for an explanation.

"I know we're in the middle of nowhere", I plainly state.

She's taken aback for a second but it quickly fades and she starts explaining," This kind boy", she starts motioning with her hand to a red pick up trick," has offered us a ride to town from here. We are in Greenville, Iowa", she pauses waiting for my reaction but I tell her to go on. "Anyways dad is going to wait for the tow truck to get here and you, me and mom are going with the boy to his house" I nod and get out, heading straight for his truck. I knock and get in shotgun. I look at the boy, about to greet him. I'm taken aback for a minute when I notice that he looks just like Peter Pan from the movie.

"Hey Peter, I'm Alice", I say smirking.

He looks surprised then cautiously asks,"How do you know my name".

I start laughing like a lunatic, his name really was Peter, who would have known.

I regain my composure and show him my book saying," You reminded me of Peter Pan"

He relaxes and starts laughing too. "Yeah that's actually what everyone calls me back at home", he says with a twinkle in his green eyes. His hair was more auburn than red but it was close enough.

"So if I'm Peter Pan than you have to be Alice in Wonderland", he states.

"Thanks", I say sarcastically hitting him.

"What was that for?"

"Making me feel stupid"

"How'd I make Miss Wonderland feel stupid exactly"

"I never thought of anyone calling me Alice in Wonderland, I didn't even think there was a character named Alice and I read the book yesterday!", I reply, going from a whisper to a shout.

He chuckles and I slap him again saying,"Don't make me feel stupid and for future references I'm always right".

"Okay Wonder Woman, you're right", he states, thus earning himself a slap and a hostile glare. "Abusive much?", he mumbles, putting his hands up in surrender when I lifts my hand. At that moment my mom comes inside the car and yells,"Don't hit the poor fellow all he's done is be nice to us, now put that hand down"

He turns to me and mumbles,"Yeah, put the hand down". Then he turns to my mom and asks,"Mrs...uh what do you want me to call you?"

"Mrs.Ford would be fine"

"Yes, well Mrs.Ford, it is a bit late for that. You see, you have a very abusive daughter", he turns to Alice and continues," I think something needs to be done about it", he ends giving me a wink.

"Certainly, Alice you and I will have a, um, chat when we get to Peter's house".

I groan and glare at Peter mouthing, You will rue this day. He chuckles and once Clara gets in the car we drive off waving goodbye to dad.
