[au where Tae is a junior in high school and captain of the volleyball team, Kook is a sophomore and the photographer for the Volleyball team's posters and the sports section of the yearbook]
Championships were always the most stressful time of the school year. Especially for Taehyung, the captain of the volleyball team. Managing the whole team as a junior was tiring to say the least, and with the tournament coming up, practices could be anywhere from 2 to 4 hours long. It was downright exhausting, but he somehow managed to always keep his cheerful demeanor and boxy smile while the rest of the team was wishing for death.
It was also stressful for Jungkook. Being the main photographer for the volleyball team's posters and the sports section of the yearbook meant spending far too much time sitting in the bleachers praying for a good moment for an action shot. Plus, it meant he was stuck watching Taehyung.
It's not like he didn't like watching him, that wasn't it at all. It was quite the opposite really. In Jungkook's eyes, Taehyung was perfect in every way. He was tall and tan, and angular, and fit. He was downright gorgeous to look at. So much so that he was an extreme distraction from what Jungkook was actually supposed to be doing, taking pictures of the whole team.
It was another practice that had started like many others, Jungkook followed the team in and departed to the second row on the bleachers, so he wouldn't be in the way. He was determined to get some good shots in tonight so that he could possibly take a night off in the future. While he loved photography, he didn't love staying after school until 9 o'clock trying to get pictures. In strode Taehyung, always the last in so he could shut the gym door. He seemed just as cheerful as usual, nodding and smiling at Jungkook as he walked past. Jungkook internally shrieked.
As the team started to practice, Jungkook started to let his head get caught in the clouds a bit. It was going to be a long night, so he knew he had time to daydream a little. He thought about him and Tae together, how cute they would be as a couple. "Maybe we could get an apartment - ooh and a dog! I mean could you imagine how cute..."
He was now officially distracted from what was happening around him, including the stray volleyball flying directly towards his face.
"Ow! Fuck, that hurt." He said, rubbing his now swollen eye after the ball had made contact with his face.
"Ah shoot, man, are you okay?" Asked a familiar voice. Jungkook couldn't really make out who it was because he couldn't see out of his left eye. Once the watering in it stopped, he made out the outline of who was talking to him. Taehyung.
"Ah, yeah, it's cool. Just caught me in the eye is all, I think I should be okay, just gotta let the swelling go down a little." He muttered.
Taehyung shook his head. "I really am sorry, these long practices are killing me, and my aim too, apparently." He said, gesturing to Jungkook's eye. Jungkook laughed. He couldn't help but feel bad for Taehyung. He could only imagine how exhausting this was for him.
"Hey, keep practicing guys, I'm gonna go get Jungkook some ice." Taehyung yelled to the team. He received groans of disapproval in return, but took Jungkook by the arm and lead him to the first-aid room anyways.
Jungkook was stunned that he even knew his name. He let himself be dragged out of the gym and to the first-aid room by Taehyung.
"It's really not a big deal, you didn't have to walk me to get ice." He said quietly.
"Trust me, I needed a break from practice. You were a well-timed distraction." He responded, laughing while he talked. Jungkook laughed back, realizing that he was finally seeing Taehyung for who he was, a normal person. Normally he seemed like this hyperactive superhuman who always had their stuff together. But now? Just a normal teenager who needed a break. It only made Jungkook fall more and more in love with him by the second.
They finally made their way into the nurse's office, scavenging for an ice pack. Jungkook was trying to be helpful, but he still couldn't really see out of one eye. As he climbed down from a shelf, he tripped and found himself face down on the floor.
Except someone had seemed to break his fall.
"Ah! Sorry!" He said, quickly standing himself up, reaching down to help Tae up as well. They both brushed themselves off and laughed.
"I think it's safe to say that you should probably just take a seat." Tae said, laughing at Jungkook, who was now visibly flustered. "Uh, yeah." He said in response.
"Ah, here we go." Tae said, turning around with an ice pack in hand. He walked over to Jungkook and got extremely close as he pressed it to his eye. He was so close that Jungkook felt like all the air in his lungs was gone. When he finally stepped away, Jungkook let out a deep breath he didn't know he'd been holding in.
Taehyung helped Jungkook off the small bench and walked with him back to the gym. "Hey, uh, Jungkook?" He started, his tone ringing with nerves. "What's up?" He responded. Taehyung sucked in a deep breath before he continued. "Maybe like, one night after practice, would you wanna grab dinner? I would say coffee but I don't know if that's really appropriate at 9 at night." Jungkook laughed. "Yeah, sure. As long as you promise you won't nail me in the face with anymore volleyballs." He said, smiling. Taehyung laughed. "Hey, hey, it was an accident!"
As they proceeded back into the gym, Taehyung nodded at Jungkook as he walked back over to the team. Jungkook climbed the bleachers and smiled. He was going on a date with Taehyung. Ho-ly shit.
[A/N Holy fuck this is probably one of the longest ones I've written, this took forever. Hope you enjoyed it, though.]
