I didn't think I'd see him ever again. He'd just be a dream. An illusion. A burning memory of something sweet that would pass by my thoughts once in a while. That's what I thought.
The next day, at the exact same time, he opened the library door and walked in with his bright toothy smile. He waved at the librarian and then looked straight at me. I pretended not to see him and continued looking for the book I wanted to read. I finally found one and pulled on its binding. I sat down at an empty table and dove into the sea full of words. As I was approaching chapter 3, I got up and searched for the prequel of the book. I had a itching question in my mind. As I paced myself back to my chair, I glanced and saw the edge of a sticky note protruding from my book. I opened it with a confused look to see a swirly handwritten note.
Hi. My name is Max :)
My heart leaped. I looked to my left to see the boy, Max, smiling at me. I felt sick. Was he trying to talk to me? This would make him real. Not a dream. Not an illusion. And not a character from a book. A real person trying to have a conversation with me. When it's real life, you can't control what happens. It could turn out perfect and cute. Or awkward. Or horrible. Or cringe worthy. So many bad options.
I could hear footsteps approaching. Max had walked towards and me and sat himself in the chair next to me. I grabbed a pencil near me and wrote my response.
I'm Lily.
I put it back in the book and passed it down on the table to him as I pulled a piece of my hair behind my ear.
He opened the book and blushed. "Lily" he mouthed. He spoke out loud. "That's a..." He was interrupted by the librarian who shushed him. We both chuckled. He paused, then wrote something down the the paper once again.
That's a pretty name.
I chuckled and felt heat run up to my cheeks.
The next couple of minutes was a blur. We kept writing on sticky notes. It was like a flirty scene from a cheesy movie. The type of things that happen in book and movies only. But it was actually happening right now. He then passed a note that said...
Homework calls. Got to go.
I hid my frown and gave him a neutral look. He shrugged his shoulders as his thick eye brows pointed up. His eyes looked so pure and his soft pink lips were pursed to the right.
Ok.
I replied. He then bite his lip as he wrote the next note. He then folded it up and placed it on his side of the table. He grabbed his blue backpack and slipped it over his sharp shoulder. Without looking back, he disappeared out the library door and back into the real world. I watched his every move as he walked out the door. Then, I leaped and grabbed the note with excitement.
Don't worry. This is just the beginning of a great friendship...
...or more.
