Chapter 1...Secrets

Tiana leaned trembling, against the twisted oak tree. She squeezed her eyes shut as a dry sob escaped from her lips, her shoulders heaved as silent tears trickled down her porcelain cheeks. Her throat constricted and she tried not to make a sound but the flood of tears that had built up throughout the years were determined not to be stopped and for the first time in 10 years she let herself cry. She was fed up of holding it all in.

A dry twig snapped somewhere in the shadows. Tiana froze; she could never let anyone see her like this. She swiped her tears away with the back of her hand, gathered the skirts of her ivory gown and backed away from the tree. She stared into the shadows and could just make out a dark outline of someone. She gasped and her hand flew to her mouth, she whipped around and ran.

Adrian looked as the girl ran from him, he knew she’d seen him and he cursed his stupidity but he couldn’t help being curious about who she was or why the sound of her suppressed sobs had drawn him to her . He kicked at the twig that had betrayed his hideout and turned to leave but as he glanced back at the oak tree a twinkle of reflected moonlight caught his eyes. He turned back and peered at the place where the girl had hidden. Something lay in the dirt; he brushed the leaves away to reveal a chain.

Adrian reached out and plucked the silver chain off the floor and found an intricately carved locket hung from it. He turned the necklace over in his hands, this was no simple show piece; it was exquisitely crafted and was obviously made with great skill, patience and love. He dropped the locket and chain into his pocket and with a last look back at the dark house the girl disappeared into, he turned and headed back into the ball room.

Tiana released the breath she hadn’t even realized she was holding in as she watched the young man walk back into the golden glow of the ball room. Letting the curtains fall back into place she turned to switch on the lights in her room. Her throat was still raw from the heartbreak and her eyes still wet but all she wanted to do was forget today and pretend that nothing had ever happened.

Slipping out of her dress, Tiana dipped her hand into the warm water and marveled at how it caressed her skin and wound itself around her fingers, it was as if it was alive. She lifted her fingers out and twirled them in the air, the water swirled through the air following the pattern of her fingers. She giggled and began to relax, no matter how many times she’d done this the beauty of it never stopped shocking her and the warm feeling of happiness began to thaw away her fears.

Climbing into the bath she let herself sink into her usual routine, gently warming up the water but cooling down the air around her to stop the steam from condensing the windows. She could feel the elements following her will as the water molecules whizzed around her body massaging and warming her whilst the slow air particles gently lulled her to sleep. For the first time in the day she felt alive and she smiled, this was her not so little secret.
