Theodus’s glare ripped through me like a winter storm; his eyes piercing my soul.
“What boy, Maritae?” he repeated but with more determination to know.
I tried to not make eye contact with him. I knew he would tell father if he found out, and then father would have me placed under house arrest for sure, then I would never get to see him again.
“Maritae, answer me! What boy?” I looked up at him; he was more…scared than anything else.
“Nobody, Theo. Nobody,” I whimpered. I knew he wouldn’t buy it but how could I tell him?
“Mari—“but he broke of as our parents walked in.
They glided in as graceful as swans and sat at the opposite end of the table. Our mother was tall and elegant. My brother and I obviously got our looks from her, with her strawberry blonde hair and green eyes. Our father was a moderate height with brown hair and green eyes. Osoreme and Predatim’s father was simular looking to our father, although he had black hair and green eyes. Their mother on the other hand had orange hair and blue eyes. She was shorter than the king however she shone brighter than he. She was one of the most beautiful goddesses in all the realms. She had soft features and had her laugh sounded like tiny silver bells. She and my mother had become great friends after marrying the princes.
“Hello children.” They chimed in unison
“Good evening,” we replied back.
Theodus coaght my eye and mouthed you will tell me after dinner. I nodded sheepishly as I knew I couldn’t hide it from him.
After dinner I said goodnight to Osoreme and Predatim, then Theodus and I headed to our rooms. We were on the opposite side of the palace to the other pair which wasn’t such a bad thing when we couldn’t sleep and decided to cause mischief.
We walked in silence along the passage ways and grand halls filled with portraits of great kings from before our time. Their faces were looming and made me more uncomfortable than I already was. We got to the hallway that separated our rooms and instead of Theo turning into his he pushed past me and walked into mine. He sat on my chaise lounge and stared at me, waiting for me spill everything to him. I looked at him shyly and tried to build up the courage to tell him…but it wasn’t coming. I kept opening and closing my mouth trying to find the right words to start the conversation. His expression grew confused and his frown began to transform into a grin. He couldn’t help himself; he burst into laughter at my inadequacy to start a sentence.
“Fine,” he said, “I’ll ask you questions instead, just answer them truthfully, k?”
I nodded in reply and awaited his inquiries.
“OK Maritae, let’s start with the basics. Where did you first meet this…this…John Doe, or whatever his name is?”
I took a little time to consider his question and then a deep breath to ready my response.
“I haven’t actually met him yet. I have simply seen him, and I don’t know what his name is yet, I haven’t even been able to talk to him.” I hoped that gave him enough information to gather he wasn’t from here. He blinked a couple of times and then started again.
“Alright so you and Osoreme have been spying on this poor fellow haven’t you? Where did you see him first? Behind Edgards potion shop? In the Gardens of tranquillity?” I could detect sarcasm in his voice but resisted to tell him the whole truth. He had to guess for himself. He had to figure it out.
“No. Nowhere like that. He is somewhere…out of reach…in a..hmmm..forbidden place shall we say…” Oh please Theo guess it. Guess it. But I could tell from his expression he had figured it out.
“Maritae, are you trying to tell me this boy you fancy is none other than a common mortal boy?” His sarcasm was gone and replaced with concern. He looked at me, hoping I would say it was a joke and nothing more. Hoping I was fooling around. But he would have no such luck.
“You’ve got to be kidding me, Maritae.”
